Superhero Movie
- Science fiction
- Fantasy
- Parody
- Light-hearted
A 2008 spoof of superhero origin stories that takes the broad, silly approach—radioactive insects, bumbling villains, earnest incompetence played for laughs. It's exactly what it sounds like: a sketch stretched to feature length, with Leslie Nielsen doing his thing and a cast game enough to commit to absurdity. For anyone who finds parody more fun than the actual thing it's riffing.

Scary Movie 22001
A pre-Peak Friedberg/Seltzer spoof that actually lands—sharp timing, game cast, and a real affection for the films it mocks. This is the template Superhero Movie follows, just better executed.
But Heavy on sex jokes and a kind of early-2000s energy that hasn't aged like wine. If crude humor bores you now, it'll feel thin.

Galaxy Quest1999
Parody that understands its source material deeply enough to make the joke land for fans and newcomers alike. Tim Allen gives one of his best performances, and the affection is genuine.
But Structural and clever rather than silly. If you want pure chaos, this is too smart and too much of an actual film.

The Lego Movie2014
Genre pastiche that works as genuine entertainment AND satire. Voice work is exceptional, the visual gags are inventive, and it respects what it's spoofing while dismantling it.
But Very much a product of its decade. The relentless quip-per-minute pace might feel exhausting if you want to breathe during comedy.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Mystery Men1999
Both feature C-tier superheroes, but Mystery Men actually cares about them as people. It's what Superhero Movie could have been if it wanted to say something underneath the jokes.
A superhero comedy that functions as a genuine ensemble character piece. Thoughtful about failure and mediocrity while still being funny. Cast at the top of their form doing character work in a silly premise.
But Tries to be both parody and real film, so it commits to neither fully. Tonal whiplash if you're not on its wavelength. Some find it too sincere for spoof.

Hot Shots!1991
Charlie Sheen in peak physical comedy, armed with one of the sharpest joke-to-second ratios ever committed to film. A masterclass in how to spoof an established genre without contempt.
But Heavy reliance on dated references and a frenetic 90s energy. Feels of-its-time in ways that can feel alienating now.

Tropic Thunder2008
Genre satire with actual stakes and performances—Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. all bring genuine acting to a comedy. Funny AND a real film underneath the jokes.
But Extremely quotable to the point of being exhausting in certain circles. The war movie underneath can feel dated.

Undercover Brother2002
70s blaxploitation spoof with charm, genuine laughs, and an earnestness that's disarming. Eddie Griffin commits fully, and the affection for its source material is real.
But Slighter than it wants to be, and some jokes land harder than others. Pacing dips in the middle.

Not Another Teen Movie2001
Rapid-fire high school movie satire with a genuinely talented young cast. The joke density is high, and it understands exactly what it's mocking.
But Relies heavily on references to early-2000s teen films that younger viewers might not recognize. Very much of its moment.

The Comeback2023
Recent spoof that proves the format can still work. Fast, silly, and unashamed about committing to dumb humor without winking too hard at the audience.
But Wildly uneven—some jokes land, others disappear into the void. Feels assembled rather than sculpted.

Date Movie2006
Friedberg and Seltzer's romantic comedy spoof. If you like rapid-fire absurdism and don't mind your humor landing at a 40% success rate, there are genuine moments here.
But Most jokes miss badly. It's the template for why this style of parody fell out of favor. Watching it is like watching someone try on 200 hats.

The Venture Bros.2003
Where Superhero Movie lands gags through exaggeration, Venture Bros. finds humor in the reality beneath the genre. It's what happens when someone who loves these stories gets to dismantle them thoughtfully over seven seasons.
Adult animation that deconstructs superhero and action-adventure tropes with surgical precision. Genuinely brilliant writing, ongoing mythology that rewards attention, and a voice cast that elevates everything. Funny without trying.
But Slow burn. Early seasons are rougher. It's genre deconstruction for people who love the genres, so if you don't actually care about superhero comics, the references won't land as comedy. Requires patience.
