Still Life

Other titles called Still Life: the 2006 film, the 2013 film.

A haunting 15-minute film where three friends wake in a mysterious limbo, caught between life and death. Quietly philosophical and visually striking, it unfolds with the dreamlike logic of a fever dream. For anyone who likes their stories strange, intimate, and willing to sit with unanswered questions.

Mulholland Drive2001

A fractured, hypnotic puzzle about identity and loss in Los Angeles. Like Still Life, it moves between states of consciousness, making meaning from atmosphere and dread rather than plot.

But Nearly 3.5 hours of intentional obscurity. Some scenes feel glacially paced, and the film doesn't so much resolve as evaporate.

The Fountain2006

Three timelines, one love, the question of what persists after death. Visually ambitious and emotionally raw, it reaches for something transcendent across centuries.

But Aggressively non-linear and unapologetically sentimental. The ambition sometimes outruns execution, and it can feel pretentious if you're not with it.

A Ghost Story2017

A widowed ghost watches his house and former life, exploring how time and memory haunt us. Slow, strange, and genuinely eerie in ways that build rather than explode.

But The pacing is deliberately glacial. A long monologue mid-film about entropy and existence tests patience. Some people find it insufferable.

Wings1966

Both use liminal spaces and dreamlike visuals to ask what's real when the mind and body separate. Both trust the viewer to sit with strangeness.

A Soviet sci-fi film about a woman dreaming she's a cosmonaut, slipping between realities. Visual poetry about consciousness and loss that predates every Western meditation on limbo.

But Soviet-era pacing and philosophical density. Subtitles, allegorical coldness. Genuinely hard to find and impossible to scan.

Au Revoir les Enfants1987

Aliens learning human language through time itself. A meditative sci-fi film that builds to something unexpectedly moving about connection and loss across impossible distances.

But Linguistic and cerebral. Very little happens in conventional terms. Demanding and slow, with an ending some experience as crushing rather than transcendent.

Under the Skin2014

Scarlett Johansson plays an alien harvesting human prey in Glasgow. Hypnotic, visual storytelling where mood and alienation matter more than plot clarity.

But Deliberately obscure and detached. Long stretches of ambient dread with minimal dialogue. Feels incomplete to many viewers.

The Night House2021

A widow spirals through her home and her husband's secrets after his suicide. Visually inventive and genuinely unsettling, mixing grief, mystery, and something like supernatural horror.

But Tackles suicide directly and unflinchingly. Some scenes are designed to actively unsettle rather than comfort. Not a film that lets you off easy.

I'm Thinking of Ending Things2020

A woman and her boyfriend's road trip spirals into unreality and psychological vertigo. Darkly funny and suffocatingly weird, with layers that reveal themselves gradually.

But Deliberately confusing and sometimes infuriating. Kundera monologues and tonal whiplash. Some find it self-satisfied rather than mysterious.

The Sixth Sense1999

A child therapist helps a boy who sees dead people navigate his gift and trauma. A masterclass in building dread and misdirection while remaining emotionally grounded.

But The twist is famous enough to blunt its power. Once you know, rewatches can feel manipulative. Some find it too neat after the reveal.

Come True2020

Both films are about characters trapped in states they can't control or fully understand, with visuals that make the internal external and strange.

A homeless teen enters a sleep study that slides into body horror and existential panic. Gorgeously unsettling, with synth-pop horror dread and genuine terror about consciousness itself.

But Graphic body modification and intense paranoia. Some scenes are deeply uncomfortable. The ending is deliberately bleak and offers no release.

The Lighthouse2019

Both films trap characters in a confined space (physical or psychological) where the boundary between reality and something stranger dissolves. Both trust silence and atmosphere.

Two men isolated on a lighthouse descend into paranoia and mythology in black and white. Claustrophobic, verbal, and hypnotic—a two-hander that builds like pressure in a sealed room.

But Nearly incomprehensible dialogue in a thick nautical accent. Deliberately suffocating and bleak. No movement, no plot, only psychological deterioration.
