Boyle and McGregor's next collaboration, an explosion of style and momentum that makes Shallow Grave look like a warm-up. Same nerve and gallows humour, but wilder and looser, watching addiction instead of money rot a friendship group.

But Heroin, not cash, drives the corruption here, and its swagger and soundtrack can feel more celebratory of chaos than Shallow Grave ever does.

A Simple Plan1998

Found money, three people, a pact to keep quiet — the same premise played as slow-burn snowbound tragedy rather than stylish thriller, and it is genuinely devastating by the end.

But It trades Shallow Grave's dark wit for straight-faced dread; there's barely a laugh in it and the pace is patient rather than propulsive.

Same premise stripped to its bones: ordinary people, one dead body, and the corrosive thrill of getting away with it — Hitchcock got there decades before Boyle, in one room, almost in real time.

Hitchcock's real-time experiment: two young men host a dinner party with the body of a friend they've just strangled hidden in the room, testing how long they can perform normalcy over a corpse.

But It's stagey and theatrical by design, filmed to look like one continuous take, and its pleasures are structural and tense rather than fast or visceral.

Blood Simple1985

The Coens' scrappy debut, a clear ancestor to Boyle's own film — infidelity, a hired gun, and a plan that curdles the moment anyone starts improvising. Nasty, clever, and lean.

But It's rougher-edged and low-budget where Shallow Grave is slick, and some of its twists have been imitated so often they've lost their shock.

Very Bad Things1998

A stag weekend, a dead stripper, and friends who decide to bury the problem instead of reporting it — the same engine as Shallow Grave, cranked into gleeful, tasteless overdrive.

But The comedy is broader and meaner, with none of Boyle's visual restraint; at times it feels like it's laughing at cruelty rather than examining it.

Same DNA — greed as engine, a group turning on one member once cash is on the table — but the volume's turned up from clammy tension to gleeful horror.

A bride discovers her new in-laws intend to hunt her through their mansion as a condition of inheritance — gory, funny, and entirely about what people will do to each other over money.

But It's broad horror-comedy with splatter and jump scares; anyone wanting Shallow Grave's tense realism will find this cartoonish by comparison.

The Staircase2022

Where Shallow Grave imagines what a body and a secret do to people who loved each other, this documentary sits inside an actual version of that question for years, never resolving it.

A real death, a real staircase, and years of courtroom ambiguity over whether it was an accident or murder — a slow, patient documentary that never quite tells you what to believe.

But It runs several hours and offers no tidy resolution; if you want Shallow Grave's compressed nastiness, this demands real patience for real doubt.
