Pippi Longstocking
- Comedy
- Light-hearted
A 1997 animated feature about the incorrigible red-haired orphan who lives by her own rules, hoists horses, and befuddles authority figures with cheerful anarchy. It's exuberant and chaotic, built for kids who like mischief and adults who remember liking mischief. Warm, occasionally messy, always energetic.

Matilda1996
Another gifted child living outside normal society, using intelligence and will to outwit adults. Similarly celebrates imagination and kindness as weapons against a grey world.
But Roald Dahl's darker sensibility means the stakes feel higher and less purely fun than Pippi's anarchic romp.

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events2004
Orphaned resourceful children navigating a hostile adult world with cleverness and loyalty. The same tone of playful doom and the conviction that growing up isn't growing up at all.
But Deliberately grim and melancholic where Pippi stays buoyant—the style takes work to appreciate.

The Fairly OddParents2001
Child protagonist who gets away with impossible things through magic rather than just being Pippi, but captures that same anarchic spirit and love of slapstick and surreal problem-solving.
But The premise wears thin over many seasons, and the animation is cruder and sometimes looks cheap.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Conan the Barbarian1982
Both are stories about a solitary outsider who is stronger and happier than civilised people, and whom civilisation cannot hold.
A child orphaned and raised alone without society's rules, who becomes powerful and chaotic precisely because no one taught her to obey. Same core: isolation as freedom rather than tragedy.
But Visceral sword-and-sorcery violence and a genuinely dark tone; a hard left turn in register from children's animation.

Éloïse
Another precocious girl child living by her own logic in a grand building, befriending adults and causing controlled chaos. Same energy of a kid who's basically fine without being tamed.
But Much shorter and quieter than Pippi; feels more like a pleasant sketch than a story with stakes.

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen1988
An older liar and adventurer telling impossible stories in a live-action fantasy world, mixing carnival energy with genuine wonder. Same commitment to imagination over realism.
But Visually busy and sometimes confusing; the tone bounces between whimsy and something more unsettling.

Harriet the Spy1996
Young girl making her own rules, running her own operation, learning that independence has consequences. Similar era, similar spirit of a kid protagonist who refuses to shrink.
But More grounded and socially aware, less purely fun—the stakes are school politics rather than adventure.

The Goonies1985
A gang of neighbourhood kids outwitting adults and each other through optimism and improvisation on an adventure that feels real despite the fantastical plot.
But Much darker and more action-driven; the violence and peril are genuine, not slapstick.

Jem1985
A girl living outside conventional limits, funding her own life and operation, baffling authority figures while staying kind. Earnest eighties adventure energy.
But A TV show from 1985; the animation and music feel locked in amber, and the plotting is thin.

Nuts1987
A girl running away and sleeping in a museum, making her own choices, encountering the world on her own terms. Quiet meditation on independence and growing up.
But Contemplative and slow, almost a mood piece; nothing like the accelerated chaos of Pippi's world.

Kiki's Delivery Service1989
Both trust that a young person alone in the world is not a tragedy to be fixed but a story to be enjoyed; both find joy in small competence.
A girl alone in a new city, earning her way, finding friends, solving problems with resourcefulness and good nature. Hayao Miyazaki's quieter masterpiece about independence and growing up.
But Paced like a watercolour painting; Japanese animation from 1989 with a different rhythm entirely from 1997 North American CGI.

Freeway1996
Same protagonist DNA—resourceful, unsocialized, female, indestructible through will—but played as horror instead of farce.
A feral girl on her own, speaking in slang, refusing authority, beating predators at their own game. What if Pippi met the actual world outside a fairy tale.
But A satirical thriller with real danger, sexual threat, and violence; completely unsuitable for the age group that watches Pippi and genuinely disturbing.
