One Year to Live, Buy a Man
A 40-year-old woman given a year to live indulges in what she's always denied herself: a paid relationship with a nightclub host. What starts as a straightforward transaction becomes something neither expected. It's tender and funny, built on the chemistry between two people learning to want things. For anyone who's felt the weight of self-denial, or believed it was too late to begin.

Midnight Diner2014
A Japanese gem about loneliness and connection in small moments. Characters drift in and out of a diner, each carrying private sorrows. Like your film, it finds intimacy in everyday transactions and the grace of human attention.
But Paced like a whisper. If you need plot momentum or grand gestures, the quiet accumulation of moments might feel too slight.

About Time2013
A man discovers he can time-travel, and uses it not for grandeur but to deepen his relationships. It's about mortality, regret, and choosing to be present. The romance isn't the point; it's a side effect of learning how to live.
But The fantasy element might feel tacked-on. Some find the sentimentality heavy-handed, and it veers into family drama that not everyone signed up for.

Tokyo Story1953
An elderly couple visits Tokyo to see their children, and the film simply watches them exist together and apart. Ozu finds everything—grief, joy, small resentments, deep love—in ordinary life. Foundational to understanding Japanese cinema's restraint and depth.
But Nothing happens. Literally. If you need plot, dialogue that explains feelings, or a score that tells you what to think, this will feel glacially slow.

Something you would not have found on your own.
The Negotiation2018
Both centre a woman over 40 discovering agency and choice late, and both pivot on the question of what we're willing to sacrifice or spend when we believe time is finite.
A kidnapper holds a woman's daughter hostage, and the woman—a skilled negotiator—must decide whether to follow protocol or break every rule for love. It's a thriller with an older female protagonist whose experience and intelligence are her power, not a liability. The twist is earned, not cheap.
But Korean thrillers move fast and demand close attention. If you blinked during the setup, the entire third act will confuse you. Subtitles, pacing, and moral ambiguity are not for everyone.

Yesterday2019
A world where The Beatles never existed. A man uses the gap to become famous, but the film's real story is about choosing authenticity over ambition, and who we become when no one's watching. Warm and clever without being smug.
But The romance subplot feels obligatory, and the film knows it. Some of the humour misses, and it occasionally lapses into greeting-card philosophy.

Shoplifters2018
A found family of petty criminals living hand-to-mouth in Tokyo. Hirokazu Kore-eda finds tenderness in precarity, and dignity in people society has discarded. It argues that love, however humble, is real when it's chosen.
But Morally complex in ways that won't resolve tidily. Some scenes are very hard to watch, and the film refuses to condemn or absolve anyone too easily.

The Farewell2019
A Chinese-American woman learns her grandmother is dying but returns home for a family gathering built on a collective lie. It's about cultural collision, mortality, and what we owe each other. Funny, devastating, and deeply felt.
But The tonal shifts between comedy and grief might feel jarring. Some viewers find the family dynamics exhausting rather than touching.

Lost in Translation2003
Two lonely people meet in Tokyo and form a connection that's romantic but not sexual, intimate but ultimately ephemeral. Sofia Coppola's masterpiece about how we find ourselves in other people, and how we let them go.
But Deliberately paced to the point of melancholy. The ending won't satisfy if you need closure or a clear emotional destination. Very much a film about the space between things.

The Light Between Oceans2016
A couple isolated on a lighthouse tend a baby that washes ashore, then must choose between love and conscience. It's about the weight of commitment, how we live with impossible decisions, and the cost of kindness.
But Visually gorgeous but narratively straightforward, it can feel overly sentimental. Some find it slow and emotionally obvious compared to what it's trying to attempt.

Caché2005
Both explore intimacy as a form of transaction, and ask what we really know or owe each other when desire enters a relationship. Both also suggest that some connections, however real, might be irresolvable.
A French couple receives anonymous VHS tapes of their home being filmed. The film itself becomes a mystery about secrets, guilt, and how we look at people without seeing them. Haneke builds dread from stillness. Unforgettable and deeply unsettling.
But Extremely austere and challenging. The ending raises more questions than it answers, and the violence—when it comes—is shocking. Not a film that makes you feel better.

I Wish2011
Like your film, it's built on the premise that we get a specific amount of time, and must choose how to spend it—not on grand gestures, but on the people and moments we actually have. Both find profundity in small decisions.
Two brothers separated by their parents' divorce make a wish that their family will reunite. A Hirokazu Kore-eda film about loss, time, and what we hope for. It's gentle, never manipulative, and captures childhood longing with aching accuracy.
But It's a film about children, but aimed at adults grieving what childhood promised. If you watch it while vulnerable, you will cry. Also, it's fundamentally sad, which some people cannot forgive in art.
