Matchbox the Movie
A raucous action-comedy about childhood friends pulled into international espionage. John Cena leads an ensemble cast through a globe-trotting adventure that trades subtlety for chaotic charm, landing somewhere between heist film and buddy comedy. It's loud, dumb, and knows it—perfect if you want your thrills salted with genuine laughs.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy big, goofy action comedies where the set pieces are loud and the banter between old friends carries the whole thing, and you don't mind logic taking a back seat to fun.
Skip it if you want sharp, tightly plotted thrills, since this leans on broad jokes and noisy chases, and at just over two hours the gags can start to feel stretched thin.
What it asks of you: Settle in for a long, busy ride of stunts and crowd-pleasing chatter, with little need to track every turn of the plot. Your attention can wander between the explosions and still keep up.

Red Notice2021
Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot in a globe-trotting heist-action romp that prioritizes comedy and charm over realism. Similar ensemble energy and winking tone; equally fond of its own absurdity.
But Spends more time on banter than plot coherence, which some find exhausting rather than entertaining. The action is competent but never spectacular.

The Lost City2022
Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum reunite estranged friends for an adventure that's part action, part romance, mostly comedy. The same warmth toward its own ridiculousness and genuinely funny character dynamics.
But The plot is genuinely thin and exists only to move people between set pieces. If you need narrative weight, this isn't it.

Jungle Cruise2021
Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt on a river adventure with constant quips, period charm, and earnest action sequences. Hits that same sweet spot of adventure spectacle laced with comedy that doesn't undercut the fun.
But Studios clearly made this for a broad international audience, which means it plays it remarkably safe. Nothing about it surprises; it soothes.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang2005
Both films build on the principle that an ensemble of strong personalities matters more than plot mechanics; good actors riffing together is the actual engine. Shane Black's DNA runs through every modern action-comedy.
Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer in a Los Angeles noir-action-comedy about friends and criminal schemes. Shane Black invented the template for action-comedy tone—funny but never underestimating its audience; every quip earns the character saying it.
But Twenty years old and made for adults, not the broadest audience. The self-aware humor assumes you know noir tropes, and it's genuinely violent in ways modern comedies pretend not to be.

Free Guy2021
Ryan Reynolds in an action-comedy with absurdist humor, a video game setting, and genuine stakes despite the silliness. Cena's energetic charm mirrors Reynolds' approach to balancing laughs with actual peril.
But Relies heavily on pop-culture references and in-jokes that land differently depending on your age and gaming knowledge. Some scenes feel like ads.

The Man from Toronto2022
Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson as mismatched action partners on a kidnapping-gone-wrong adventure. Similar chemistry-driven approach where the relationship between leads matters more than the plot mechanics.
But Netflix comedies from this era often feel stretched to movie length; pacing drags in the middle act. Hart's comedy style is very particular and not for everyone.

Kate2021
Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays an assassin on a 24-hour revenge mission with frequent humor and constant kinetic action. Proves that ensemble action-comedies work best when grounded in a character's genuine stakes.
But Takes itself more seriously than pure comedies, which can feel tonally awkward. The action is well-shot but the plot is extremely familiar.

The Lost City of Z2017
Charlie Hunnam and Tom Holland in a jungle expedition adventure with genuine period atmosphere and historical stakes. Shows that globe-trotting adventure can be funny without sacrificing real tension or wonder.
But Much slower and more deliberately paced than a modern action film. The humor is dryer and the adventure is more about obsession than spectacle.

Bullet Train2022
Brad Pitt as an assassin on a moving train with an ensemble of colorful characters, constant action, and deadpan comedy. Fast-paced ensemble action-comedy that trusts its cast's chemistry and charm.
But The plot is intentionally convoluted, which some find clever and others find needlessly complicated. The violence level surprises people who think it's purely comedy.

The Adam Project2022
Ryan Reynolds and Mark Ruffalo in a time-travel action film with genuine family drama underneath the action and quips. Manages both sincere emotional beats and humor without one sabotaging the other.
But The science fiction logic falls apart under any scrutiny whatsoever. If you need plot consistency, this will frustrate you immediately.

The 'Burbs1989
Proves that adventure and espionage plots are just scaffolding for ensemble chemistry. Both films understand that what audiences want is good people having fun together, not the geopolitical stakes that officially hang the story.
Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, and Rick Ducommun as suburbanites investigating mysterious neighbors. A comedy about ordinary people accidentally becoming heroes that doesn't need global stakes or high-budget action—chemistry and tone do all the work.
But Made in 1989 and deliberately small-scale. Kids expecting Marvel-sized spectacle will find it slow; the humor is character-based, not reference-heavy.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople2016
Both prove that comedy and adventure work best when rooted in real character need rather than plot spectacle. The heart of these films is 'these people matter to each other'—everything else is decoration.
Sam Neill and a teenage boy on the run in New Zealand wilderness. A comedy-adventure where genuine heart, natural character humor, and actual danger coexist. Shows that you can be funny AND moved at the same time.
But Entirely lacks the action-blockbuster scale you might expect from the premise. New Zealand accents and indie film pacing will feel small after typical action films.
