Kon-Tiki dramatizes Thor Heyerdahl's real 1947 voyage - six men, one balsa raft, 4,300 miles of open Pacific - staged with old-fashioned adventure-movie confidence and real ocean spectacle. It's handsome, briskly told, more interested in stubborn conviction and physical peril than academic debate. Good for anyone who likes true-story derring-do, practical effects over CGI, and men arguing about currents while sharks circle below. Norwegian-made, Oscar-nominated, unabashedly earnest in the best sense.

Same directors let loose their nautical instincts on a franchise-scale fantasy adventure - rope-swinging chaos and ghost ships instead of survival math, but the same delight in the ocean as a stage.

But Giant, effects-driven and utterly weightless where Kon-Tiki felt real; go in for popcorn, not authenticity.

Another vast ocean crossing on a makeshift vessel, shot with painterly visual imagination that turns survival into something closer to myth or fable.

But Its spiritual, dreamlike tone and CGI-heavy visuals sit far from Kon-Tiki's grounded, physical reality.
