I Do

A British gay man facing deportation marries his lesbian best friend to stay in America, then falls for someone real. It's a tender, urgent drama about how immigration law can trap you between survival and honesty, between the family you chose and the love you found. For anyone who's felt caught between what's legal and what's right.

Brokeback Mountain2005

The definitive film about love between men that defies easy choices. Achingly beautiful, structurally brilliant, and it doesn't look away from the cost of compromise and secrecy.

But Deeply sad. Some find it slow. The landscape is gorgeous but the emotional landscape is bleak.

The Kids Are All Right2010

A lesbian couple, their donor dad, and the messy reality of family. Smart, funny, and genuinely interested in how love works across weird configurations without ever becoming a lesson.

But Suburban comedy-drama can feel thin. The emotional climax divides audiences sharply on who's right.

Pride2014

A group of queer activists and misfits fundraise for striking miners in 1984 Wales. Joyful and angry at once, it's about found family, solidarity, and the radical act of refusing to disappear.

But Very British in its rhythm and humour. Some characters are sketched rather than drawn. It risks sentimentality about community.

D.E.B.S.2005

Both are about love disrupting a calculated life: one through marriage of convenience, one through forbidden attraction. Both ask what you're willing to lose for honesty.

An all-girl spy comedy where the most dangerous operative falls for her target. It's camp, self-aware, wildly fun, and takes queer romance as seriously as it takes the heist plot. Pure pleasure.

But It's deliberately trashy and light. Some see it as too jokey. The plot is thin. It's a film more interested in winking at you than in realism.

Circumstance2011

An Iranian girl falls for her best friend in a world where same-sex love carries lethal weight. Intimate, sensual, and unsparing about how desire collides with theocracy and surveillance.

But Difficult subject matter. Shot in a style that can feel opaque. The ending is bleak by design.

Moonlight2016

A Black man's life in three acts: boyhood, adolescence, adulthood. Poetic, precise, and interested in longing more than resolution. One of the best films about identity made.

But Dialogue is sparse and impressionistic. The pace is glacial. Some find it remote rather than moving.

Pariah2011

A Black lesbian teenager in Brooklyn trying to live honestly while her mother denies her existence. Raw, specific, and angry about respectability politics and chosen family.

But Grim and claustrophobic. Some scenes are very hard to watch. It refuses to offer comfort.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire2019

An 18th-century painter and her subject fall in love while painting a wedding portrait for a man she'll never meet. Ravishing, sensual, and quietly radical about female desire and artistic choice.

But Very slow and painterly. Almost entirely female-centered conversation. Some find it too interior.

C.R.A.Z.Y.2005

A French-Canadian boy realizes he's gay in a rigid Catholic family. Funny, heartbreaking, formally inventive, and it holds sadness and comedy in the same frame without choosing between them.

But Subtitled. Some characters are painted as bigoted and stay that way. The tone is uneven by design.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post2018

A queer girl sent to conversion therapy befriends another girl and they try to stay whole. Lighter than you'd fear, it's genuinely funny and interested in resistance and secret joy.

But It domesticates horror rather than confronting it. Some feel it doesn't go dark enough given the subject. The ending is neat.

The Wedding Banquet1993

Same premise: a same-sex person uses a heterosexual marriage as a shield against family and immigration pressures. But Lee's film finds humour in the chaos where I Do finds pathos.

A Taiwanese-American man stages a fake wedding to deceive his traditional parents, then watches his elaborate lie spiral into messy truth. Directed by Ang Lee with warmth and real comic timing.

But The tone flickers between farce and melodrama. Some cultural specifics may not land. It's dated in style. The ending is divisive.
