High School Musical
- Musical
- Light-hearted
A Disney TV movie that became a phenomenon: a jock and a nerd fall in love through musical theatre, while their friend groups freak out. It's pure fun, energetically performed, refreshingly earnest about its characters' passions, and designed to make you sing along. For anyone who's ever felt the thrill of performing, or the terror of being seen as something you're not.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy breezy, unashamedly sunny musicals where the songs do the heavy lifting and the stakes stay comfortably small, the kind of bright teen romance that plays like a Saturday-morning stage show.
Skip it if you find bubblegum pop numbers and cheerfully predictable plotting hard to sit through, since the film leans fully into its sugary, choreographed-school-spirit energy for its entire running time.
What it asks of you: Under ninety-nine minutes, it asks for little more than a willingness to hum along and let the bright, buoyant mood wash over you without much need for complexity.

Grease1978
The template that High School Musical follows: teenage romance, social cliques, infectious musical numbers, and that same joyful mess of a climax. Utterly charming and genuinely funny.
But It's 50 years old, moves slowly by modern standards, and some of its attitudes toward women haven't aged gracefully.

Hairspray2007
Similar energy and optimism, with genuine heart beneath the sparkle. John Waters' sensibility keeps it smart; the ensemble cast is joyful; the dancing is excellent. Feels like fun was actually had.
But The plot about racial integration can feel thin if you're wanting something with real teeth, and some numbers go on too long.

Pitch Perfect2012
Captures that same feeling of outsiders finding their tribe through performance. Funny, swift, genuinely charming, with a diverse cast that feels lived-in rather than assembled. The musical numbers are killer.
But Relies heavily on comedy that won't land for everyone, and the romance subplot is thin compared to what you might want.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Cabaret1972
Both films argue that the theatrical performance—the chance to step out of your assigned role—is where freedom lives. HSM makes it joyful; Cabaret makes it desperate. Same revelation, opposite temperatures.
The dark mirror: a musical where performance is survival and escapism, where the stakes are moral and sometimes fatal. Liza Minnelli is hypnotic; the choreography is revolutionary; it argues that art matters because reality is unbearable.
But It's a 1970s art film about Weimar Germany on the eve of Nazi rule. Beautiful and necessary, but fundamentally bleak. Not an escape; a confrontation.

Glee2009
High School Musical for TV, with more time to develop characters and relationships. Early seasons nail the tone: sincere emotion, great covers, social misfits finding power in art and each other.
But Quality drops sharply after season two. Later seasons become chaotic and lose sight of why you cared. Stop before it breaks your heart.

Mean Girls2004
The gold standard for high school comedy: sharp writing, genuine affection for its characters, and real laughs. The social hierarchy stuff has actual stakes. Tina Fey wrote it and it shows.
But It's not a musical, so if you're specifically chasing that theatrical high, you won't find it. Some dated cultural references, though the core is timeless.

Footloose1984
The grandfather of 'outsider shakes up conservative town through dance and music.' Kevin Bacon is magnetic; the dancing is genuinely impressive; the soundtrack is phenomenal. Pure 80s joy.
But The plot is slight and the pacing drags in the middle. Some of the earnestness will make you wince, though that's part of its charm.

The Descendants2011
Shows what happens when a talented ensemble cast works within a tight, smart script. George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, and the rest make you believe in their relationships. Funny and genuinely moving.
But It's a family drama, not a musical, so the tone is very different. Much slower, more introspective. Not what you're looking for if you want song and dance.

Z-O-M-B-I-E-S2018
High School Musical's DNA spliced with zombie mythology: outsiders (literal undead) breaking down social barriers through the school musical. Goofy concept, executed with genuine charm and great energy.
But The zombie premise is largely cosmetic and doesn't add much thematically. Some numbers feel padded. The charm only takes you so far if the music doesn't move you.

Daria1997
HSM is the story of breaking down the walls between social groups through mutual respect and art. Daria is what happens if you ask whether those walls matter, and whether integration is worth the compromises it requires. Same high school, opposite questions.
The teenage outsider story from the perspective of someone who doesn't want to join the party. Daria watches the social machinery of high school with clear eyes and sharp wit. Supremely intelligent, funny, and oddly tender about the people she dismisses.
But It's a satire, not an embrace. There's no triumphant musical moment. If you need characters to win their social battle, this will feel cynical and cold.
