Victorious

Victorious is a musical comedy-drama about a teen singer thrust into an elite arts school where she must navigate fierce friendships, stage ambitions, and the messy reality that talent alone isn't enough. It's bubblegum-bright on the surface but genuinely funny, with enough character and heart to make you care about these people. Perfect for anyone who loved ensemble shows with songs woven in naturally.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy zany, sketch-like sitcom bits and gleefully silly ensemble chemistry, and you don't mind a musical number popping up between the gags.

Skip it if you want a sitcom with grounded stakes or subtle writing, since its jokes are broad, its characters loud, and its plots keep resetting to the next bit.

What it asks of you: Half-hour episodes that come and go quickly, so it rewards a laugh-first viewing with the volume up rather than close study.

High School Musical2006

The template Victorious refines: charismatic teens, actual musical numbers, a sense that performance matters deeply to these characters. HSM has the earnest charm that makes you invest in the romance and the shows.

But Feels dated now in its aesthetic and the romance overshadows the ensemble in ways Victorious avoids. Greasier melodrama with fewer laughs.

Glee2009

Another ensemble show about misfits finding belonging through music and performance. Season one especially has that sweet spot where the song choices surprise you and the characters feel real beneath the gloss.

But Glee collapses badly as it goes on; many seasons feel like watching a show lose its mind. Starting it knowing that can be deflating.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel2017

Same DNA: a woman discovering she has a gift and pursuing it fiercely, surrounded by people with their own agendas and talents. Smarter dialogue, higher production values, but that same joy in watching someone find their voice.

But Set in the 1950s and aiming at an older audience; considerably less buoyant in tone. Takes itself seriously in ways Victorious deliberately doesn't.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Cruel Intentions1999

Both are about adolescents performing identity for an audience of peers; both understand that the performance itself is where the real character lives.

Jade West energy distilled into a feature film: brilliant, mean, gorgeous people performing versions of themselves for each other while the real cruelty happens underneath. The stakes are higher but the social game is identical—watching people navigate status, attraction, and friendship through performance.

But Significantly darker, with sexual content and actual malice. Not a music-and-triumph story; much more about how ambition and desire can poison people. Completely different register.

Degrassi2001

Dense ensemble of teens with genuine problems; every character gets real depth and storylines that matter. The show earns its emotional beats by treating teenagers like actual humans with stakes.

But Shifts between tones awkwardly and can feel heavy-handed. Less interested in fun than Victorious; more interested in making you uncomfortable.

Bunheads2012

Amy Sherman-Palladino's love letter to dance and ambition. Witty, warm, full of real ballet, and interested in what happens when passion collides with reality and other people's dreams.

But Cancelled after one season so it ends on threads. Chattier and more adult-focused than Victorious; less pop-music energy.

Godspeed2022

A coming-of-age film about a teen musician trying to prove herself. Captures that particular hunger of young artists and the friction between what you want and what's expected of you.

But Indie film with smaller production values. Quieter and more introspective than you might want; less ensemble, more internal struggle.

Penny Dreadful2014

An ensemble where every character is trying to find their place and their power. Gothic instead of musical, but has that same sense of misfits creating something together despite the darkness.

But Tonally it's the opposite—horror and dread where Victorious is brightness. If you want escapism, this is the wrong direction entirely.

Absolutely Fabulous1992

Both celebrate characters who know exactly who they are and won't shrink to fit in, even when the world suggests they should.

British comedy about two women who are disasters but unshakeable in their confidence. Same DNA as Victorious's characters—people who are wrong about almost everything but right about their own worth, making you laugh while they fail upward.

But Adult comedy with substance abuse, sexual content, and very British humor that doesn't translate to everyone. Not family-friendly, and the characters are selfish in ways Victorious characters learn not to be.

Neon Genesis Evangelion1995

Both understand that being the talented person everyone's watching is a burden disguised as opportunity; both are ultimately about the invisible struggle beneath the performance.

Japanese anime about teenagers with special abilities forced into a spotlight they didn't choose, dealing with pressure, isolation, and the gap between who people think you are and who you actually are. Genuinely inventive and funny until it demolishes you emotionally.

But Starts as action-comedy and becomes increasingly psychological and bleak. The final episodes are experimental and difficult. Entirely unlike any Western teen drama and demands patience with a very different style.
