Fermat's Room
A Spanish puzzle-thriller where four mathematicians wake up in a shrinking room and must solve increasingly brutal riddles to survive. It's intellectually playful but genuinely tense, with a real sense of dread beneath the wordplay. For anyone who loves logic games, confined-space thrillers, and doesn't mind subtitles.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy puzzle-box thrillers where the pleasure is in watching clever people reason their way through a trap, and you don't mind the characters being more sketched than rich.
Skip it if you want psychological depth or a slow-burn mood; this is a tight, talky chamber piece where the clockwork of the puzzles matters far more than the people inside them.
What it asks of you: Under ninety minutes, it asks for close attention to numbers and logic, and it moves quickly, with tension built from confined space rather than from lingering character drama.

Cube1998
A group of strangers trapped in a nightmarish geometric maze must decode its deadly patterns to escape. Like Fermat's Room but wider in scope, focusing less on math itself and more on the pure horror of an incomprehensible system.
But The dialogue is clunky and the acting varies wildly. The premise matters more than character, which some find emotionally cold.

Exam2009
Eight candidates in a sealed room take a test where the questions make no sense and the rules keep shifting. It shares Fermat's Room's obsession with puzzles as weapons and the slow realization that nothing is what it seems.
But The twist is clever but divisive. Some find it satisfying; others feel cheated by where the logic actually leads.

Circle2015
Fifty people stand in a circle and must decide who dies next. Like Fermat's Room, it's a high-concept premise that forces you to think through impossible ethics while tension crushes you.
But It's repetitive by design and extremely bleak. No clever solution saves the day; the puzzle is really about human nature, which depresses some viewers.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
La Jetée1962
Both trap their protagonists in closed systems—one physical, one temporal—where the solution requires intellectual surrender and faith in an incomprehensible authority.
A man is sent through time by scientists in a post-apocalyptic bunker to prevent extinction. Like Fermat's Room, it's a story where prisoners must solve an intellectual puzzle to survive, but told entirely through still photographs and narration—a completely different sensory experience that makes time itself the real puzzle.
But It's 28 minutes of static images, which sounds like homework. Most viewers find it hypnotic, but if you need conventional cinema, this will feel like watching a slideshow.

The Invitation2016
A dinner party in a locked house where paranoia and hidden agendas replace physical walls. The same creeping dread as Fermat's Room, but the puzzle is social and psychological rather than mathematical.
But Barely anything happens for a long time. If you need constant action or clear answers, this will feel glacial and frustrating.

Escape Room2019
A group enters a series of elaborate, lethal puzzle rooms and must work together to survive. It's essentially Fermat's Room scaled up with a bigger budget and more spectacle.
But The script is thinner and the characters are archetypes. It prioritizes visual puzzle-solving over the intellectual and moral weight that makes Fermat's Room stick.

Saw2004
Two strangers in a bathroom must piece together who trapped them and why while a timer ticks. The granddaddy of trap-room thrillers, with the same focus on puzzles as deadly communication.
But It's gorier and more exploitative than Fermat's Room. The torture can feel gratuitous if you're looking for elegance over shock value.

The Incident2014
Two strangers trapped in a stalled subway car must confront something inexplicable together. It has Fermat's Room's claustrophobia and the sense that the puzzle might be unsolvable, but it's quieter and stranger.
But It's deliberately vague and won't give you the catharsis of a solved mystery. Some viewers find it pretentious or unfinished.

Oxygen2021
A woman wakes in a cryogenic chamber with no memory and eight hours of oxygen left. Like Fermat's Room, it's a woman versus an impossible system, tense and claustrophobic, with a structure that slowly reveals its own rules.
But It's relentlessly bleak and there's no group dynamic to lighten it. If you need hope or humor, this asphyxiates on purpose.

The Vanishing1988
A man becomes obsessed with the disappearance of his girlfriend and ends up meeting her abductor. It's a thriller about obsession and puzzles, but human and unsettling rather than mechanical.
But The pacing is strange by modern standards and the ending is deliberately unsatisfying. It rewards patience but punishes anyone wanting conventional closure.

The Lives of Others2006
Both films present protagonists forced to think their way through impossible situations, but Fermat's Room is about solving external riddles while this is about confronting an internal one encoded in your own choices.
An East German secret policeman surveils a playwright and slowly realizes he's trapped in a moral labyrinth of his own making. It's a thriller about decoding meaning from incomplete information, where the real puzzle is whether redemption is possible once you've seen everything.
But It's serious and slow, more interested in conscience than in plot mechanics. If you wanted action or clever twists, this inward focus will feel glacial.

Paprika2006
Both use enclosed spaces and puzzles as metaphors for consciousness itself—the idea that understanding is a form of imprisonment, and escape requires surrendering certainty.
A psychiatrist's dreams bleed into reality, and she must track a stolen technology that lets people enter other minds. Like Fermat's Room, it's a maze where the rules keep shifting and nothing is solid—but it's surreal, animated, and gorgeously baroque rather than austere.
But The visual logic is dreamlike and the plot is deliberately disorienting. If you prefer clarity and grounded spaces, this will feel chaotic and exhausting.
