Cool as Ice

Vanilla Ice plays a leather-clad drifter who roars into a conservative small town on his motorcycle and falls for the local good girl. Part rom-com, part music video, part thriller involving witness protection and corrupt cops. It's genuinely odd: tonally whiplashed, wildly earnest, and completely unafraid of itself. For the curious, the devoted, or anyone who treasures sincerely bad decisions.

Grease1978

The essential template: opposites-attract romance, musical numbers, a leather-jacketed rebel softening for the good girl, a small-town setting that's actually a fantasy. It works because everyone involved knew exactly what they were making.

But The gender politics haven't aged brilliantly, and the film is nearly two and a half hours of watching people sing about kissing.

Footloose1984

Outsider musician challenges the conservative town's rules through music and charisma. It has the same DNA as Cool as Ice: dance, rebellion, romance, and a small town that needs to learn to let loose.

But The plot is slight and the logic is sometimes baffling. You're really just here for the dancing and the synth.

Dirty Dancing1987

Another outsider-seduces-good-girl story, but executed with real chemistry, genuine tension, and a killer soundtrack. Proves this exact structure can be genuinely compelling when everyone's committed.

But It's a slower burn than you might expect, and the class-struggle subplot won't satisfy anyone looking for plot momentum.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Eddie and the Cruisers1983

Both films treat the rebel musician archetype with unironic reverence and center him in a mystery that threatens to consume everyone around him.

A mystery about a charismatic, dangerous musician and his impact on a small town, wrapped in '50s rock and roll. Like Cool as Ice, it treats its motorcycle rebel musician with total seriousness and builds real atmosphere around him.

But The pacing is deliberately slow and cryptic. It's more interested in mood than plot clarity, which can feel frustrating.

Purple Rain1984

Prince as a musician protecting his girl from rivals and a dangerous environment. A showcase of raw talent, aggressive sexuality, and genuine stakes. It's messy but alive in a way most music movies aren't.

But The dialogue is rough and the plot is secondary to the music. It asks you to care about Prince's struggle, not necessarily the story.

Crossroads2002

Britney Spears and a road-trip romance involving music, faith, and small-town values. It's a weird artifact that swings for something genuine underneath the pop sheen—very similar energy to Cool as Ice's earnestness.

But It's a celebrity vanity project that doesn't always land. The romance can feel obligatory, and the tone shifts awkwardly.

Xanadu1980

Roller-skating musical romance with Gene Kelly, ELO on the soundtrack, and a movie that knows it's ridiculous but commits entirely. Peak '80s weirdness about a muse inspiring an artist.

But It's genuinely incoherent. The plot barely exists and the tone is all over the place—which some people find liberating and others find exhausting.

Skatetown, U.S.A.1979

Disco-era roller-skating romance with Patrick Swayze and Scott Baio. It's absurdly earnest about skating, romance, and personal growth in ways that feel weirdly authentic.

But It's obscure for good reason. The pacing is glacial and the skating sequences go on forever.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun1985

A young woman pushes back against her strict father to follow her dreams through dance and romance. It's lighter than Cool as Ice but shares the conflict between freedom and constraint, with real charm.

But The plot is thin and the romance is barely there. It's more a vehicle for dancing than storytelling.

Can't Buy Me Love1987

A nerdy outsider pays a popular girl to date him, then finds genuine connection. It's sweet, funny, and has real chemistry. The transformation is earned, not just costumes and confidence.

But The premise is creepy by modern standards. The film doesn't seem to notice, so you'll spend time uncomfortable.

The Phantom of the Opera1989

Both pit passionate outsider artistry against small-town propriety, and both ask: can genuine connection bridge that gap? Both have zero irony about the answer.

A dark, operatic romance between an outsider genius and the ingenue who falls for him despite warnings. It's dramatically overwrought and sincerely committed to every note. Bill Nighy as the Phantom is magnificent.

But It's heavy and Gothic and very long. If you're not willing to go along with the melodrama, you'll be frustrated.

Liquid Sky1982

Both are sincere about outsider culture and music as a spiritual/transformative force, but Liquid Sky approaches it from the avant-garde perspective Cool as Ice approaches from mainstream pop—they're opposite answers to the same question.

An avant-garde sci-fi film about a young woman in New York's underground club scene who attracts an invisible UFO. Fractured, surreal, and genuinely unsettling, with an electronic score that feels otherworldly. It's strange enough to make Cool as Ice look conventional.

But It's deliberately difficult and makes no concessions to narrative clarity. The sexuality is explicit and disturbing. It's an acquired taste that many won't acquire.
