A genuinely startling artifact — mid-century Hollywood grappling with the exact same suspicion and shame Boy Erased depicts, forced by censorship to say almost none of it directly.

But Melodramatic by today's standards, and its coyness about what it's actually depicting can feel like a frustrating dodge.

But No fictional scaffolding to soften it — this is testimony, not story, and some of it is genuinely hard to sit through.
