As Good As You
A comedy-drama about grief and unconventional family-building. Jo wants to have the baby she and her late wife planned, and she asks her late wife's brother to be the donor. It's warm, funny, and emotionally honest—a film about how families are made and remade through love and compromise rather than tradition.

Tiny Furniture2010
Like As Good As You, it's an intimate indie comedy-drama about a specific life moment—here, moving home post-college—that unfolds through deadpan humour and genuine tenderness. Both honour their characters' complexity.
But The pacing is deliberately languid and the humour depends on awkwardness rather than punchlines. If you want propulsive comedy, you'll feel it drag.

The Kids Are All Right2010
A lesbian family seeks out their sperm donor in this sharp, funny examination of unconventional parenthood and marriage. Like As Good As You, it finds comedy and pathos in how families actually work versus how they're supposed to.
But The tone occasionally favours conventional family drama over comedy, and some plot turns feel safer than the premise promises.

Life After Beth2014
A low-budget indie comedy with genuine emotional stakes beneath its concept. The lead performance carries both comedy and real heartbreak, much like the dual-tone work here.
But The zombie conceit can feel gimmicky, and the tonal shifts between laughs and sadness don't always land smoothly.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Rabbit Hole2010
Both are about people rebuilding their lives after losing someone they loved, and both refuse to treat that as a problem to solve rather than a fact to live with.
A film about grief after the death of a child, playing it straight—no comedy crutch, no tonal hedging. Like As Good As You, it's interested in how people survive unbearable loss and still want things. Simultaneously crushing and deeply humane.
But It is serious, quiet, and slow. There are no laughs, and some viewers will find the restraint frustrating rather than moving.

Our Flag Means Death2022
A comedy series about an unconventional chosen family learning to navigate love and loyalty. It has the same warmth and willingness to let characters be ridiculous and vulnerable in equal measure.
But The early episodes are broader than later ones; if you're not hooked by the pirate-romance setup, the character depth takes time to reveal itself.

Transparent2014
A series about a family realigning itself after a seismic personal revelation. It finds real humour in family dysfunction without being cruel, and respects emotional complexity throughout.
But It's bleak and demanding. The comedy rarely offers release, and some storylines are genuinely dark. Not a comfort watch.

Togetherness2015
A dramedy about two couples in their thirties navigating marriage, friendship, and self-discovery. It has the same generous tone toward its characters' mess and the same faith that comedy and sadness coexist.
But The show was cancelled after two seasons, so it doesn't reach a full resolution. Some threads feel abandoned.

Obvious Child2014
A comedy about an unexpected pregnancy that takes the emotional experience seriously without losing the laughs. Both films trust their audiences to hold joy and grief at once.
But The indie aesthetic is intentionally rough, and the relationship dynamics shift in ways that might feel unresolved if you want cleaner endings.

The Layover2017
A buddy comedy about two women with competing dreams and a single night to figure things out. Lightweight on plot but generous with character and humour, with real affection between leads.
But The stakes are deliberately small, which means the emotional payoff is modest. If you need high narrative stakes, this won't satisfy.

Heartbeat2022
Both trust that the most radical act can be asking for what you actually want, and both find humour and dignity in people saying difficult things to each other.
A Korean film about unexpected intimacy between two people who thought their lives were already written. Delicate, funny without trying, absolutely unsentimental about love and obligation. Tiny and perfect.
But It's from 1989 and looks like it—the image quality and aspect ratio will seem foreign. Subtitled. Very quiet; the whole film is conversation and presence.

A Good Marriage2014
Both explore what it means to build a life with someone and what happens when your actual partner diverges sharply from the one you imagined—how you rebuild from there.
An adaptation of Stephen King's novella about a woman discovering her husband isn't who she thought. It's a character study wrapped in a premise, exploring the gap between how we know people and how we actually know them.
But The reveal comes very late, and the second half is darker and more violent than the first. It's a trick film, which means early scenes feel deceptive in hindsight.
