Antonia and Jane
A sharp, clever dual-portrait of two women bound by lifelong friendship and mutual resentment. Imelda Staunton and Saskia Reeves carry this 77-minute character study with such precision that you feel the decades of petty wounds and unspoken envy crackling between them. It's small, witty, and deeply felt—for people who believe friendship's complications are as rich as any love story.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love sharp, talky comedy about the small resentments between old friends, where the jokes come from exact observation of a person rather than from set pieces.
Skip it if you want a story that moves, since this is mostly two women circling each other in conversation, and its wit can feel thin if you need warmth or plot.
What it asks of you: Under an hour and a quarter, it keeps its attention on dialogue and faces, so you'll need to listen closely and let its bitterness sit without being rescued.

Tiny Furniture2010
Like Antonia and Jane, this is a surgical examination of female friendship and creative ambition. Lena Dunham's directorial debut has the same dry wit and willingness to make its characters unglamorous and real.
But It's a slow character study with almost no plot. If you need narrative momentum or likeable protagonists, you'll struggle.

Fleabag2016
Phoebe Waller-Bridge's show has that same precision about female friendships—the love and the cruelty coexisting. Season two especially nails the way we sabotage people we adore.
But The tone shifts wildly across six seasons. Later episodes get stranger and less focused than the early ones.

The Killing2011
A Danish procedural that's actually a study in character and damage. Like this film, it trusts viewers to care about emotional truth over plot gymnastics. Brilliantly acted.
But It's thirty hours long and unrelentingly grim. The commitment required is substantial.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Babadook2014
Both films use constraint—one room, one relationship, seventy minutes—to excavate the ways we wound the people closest to us.
An Australian horror film that's actually about a fractured mother-son relationship wearing a monster suit. Jennifer Kent's film has that same precision about how intimacy breeds resentment—the same DNA, dressed in genre clothes.
But It's a horror film. If you're watching for the supernatural mechanics rather than the emotional core, you'll find it slow and frustrating.

Olive Kitteridge2014
Four episodes that understand how a woman can be difficult and right at once. Frances McDormand gives a performance of such specificity it feels almost documentary.
But Nothing happens. If plot is why you watch television, this will feel like watching someone's mother complain.

A Special Day1977
Two people, one day, a building. Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni make confinement and conversation into something profound. The emotional precision rivals anything.
But It's subtitled and Italian cinema isn't for everyone. The pacing is deliberate to the point of stillness.

Goat2016
A portrait of fraternal love and damage that's as unflinching as Antonia and Jane. It finds dark comedy in intimacy without ever winking at the audience.
But It's about male bonding through hazing and contains scenes of real brutality. The indie-film pretension can grate.

Frances1982
Jessica Lange as Frances Farmer in a tale of ambition, mental illness, and the people who fail you. Shares this film's belief that women's interior lives deserve serious attention.
But It's a biography of suffering. Long stretches feel like watching someone's breakdown in real time.

My Brilliant Friend2018
Both begin with the premise that female friendship can be as complex and destructive as any romantic relationship—and that this is worth taking seriously.
Italian television that adapts Elena Ferrante's novels into a portrait of female friendship across decades. The two leads have that same chemistry of love and poison that makes Antonia and Jane electric.
But Four seasons, each following different periods of their lives. Commitment is heavy, and the second half loses some of the fire of the first.

Red Lights2012
Both understand that the real horror isn't the external threat—it's the person you trusted turning into a stranger right in front of you.
A paranormal investigator film that is actually about two researchers whose partnership is corroded by ego and doubt. Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver replicate that Staunton-Reeves dynamic: two people who know each other too well.
But The supernatural plot is mediocre and the twist is silly. You're watching it for the fractured relationship, not the mystery.
