Television series
Vampire Academy
Other titles called Vampire Academy: the 2014 film.
A supernatural boarding school drama about the fractured friendship between two young women—one a vampire Royal, one a half-vampire Guardian—navigating elite politics, ancient threats, and the question of where loyalty belongs when power and class collide. Think *The Cruel Prince* by way of *Gossip Girl*, but with fangs and a genuinely dark edge.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy a close-knit friendship at the centre of a supernatural school saga, where class snobbery is as dangerous as the monsters and a teen-novel romance runs underneath.
Skip it if you want the vampires to be properly frightening, since the threat here is mostly intrigue and palace politics dressed in gowns, and the romance tends to lean earnest.
What it asks of you: Ten episodes of roughly 49 minutes each, so it is a light, brisk commitment that moves through school life and court rivalry and rewards easy, unhurried viewing.

Gossip Girl2007
Toxic friendships, class warfare, and the particular cruelty of people who've known each other since childhood. The schadenfreude is immense and the dialogue is sharp enough to draw blood.
But By the middle seasons it becomes a mess of retcons and jumping-the-shark moments. The early seasons are the thing, but you have to commit to all of it.

The Magicians2015
Magic school for adults with actual trauma, moral failure, and consequences. It takes its world seriously without being humourless, and the character arcs are earned rather than handed out.
But The tone shifts wildly between comedy and genuine darkness. Some people find that tonal whiplash jarring rather than clever.

Reign2013
Court intrigue, beautiful costumes, and friendships that matter more than romance. It's operatic and unapologetic about its emotions, treating teenage girls' stakes as genuinely significant.
But Historical accuracy takes a backseat to drama and it knows it. If you need your period pieces grounded, this will frustrate you.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Yellowjackets2021
Both explore how class and power fracture bonds between girls who should be allies. Both ask: what do you owe someone when loyalty becomes dangerous?
A show about female friendship that treats it with the seriousness and complexity it deserves. The mystery unfolds beautifully, the performances are extraordinary, and it refuses to make women's loyalty simple or safe.
But It's dark and violent in ways that serve the story but don't soften them. If you need your shows to be fundamentally hopeful, this will exhaust you.

Fate: The Winx Saga2021
A magic school show that doesn't condescend to its audience or its characters. The mythology is intricate, the emotional beats land, and it treats friendship as something worth fighting for.
But The second season stumbles and the cancellation leaves threads hanging. It's worth the investment anyway, but you won't get closure.

The Vampire Diaries2009
It understands that your teenage years feel apocalyptic because they *are*, within the world of your life. Fast-paced, genuinely inventive plotting, and it earns its melodrama.
But Relationship drama overtakes plot. If love triangles bore you, a lot of season 2 onwards will test your patience.

Extraordinary2023
A show about superpowers that's actually about belonging, friendship, and the quiet courage of asking for help. It's funny without undermining genuine emotion and it respects its characters completely.
But The stakes are deliberately low and introspective. Some viewers want larger-scale conflict and this won't provide it.

Legacies2018
A supernatural school show that balances ensemble dynamics with genuine stakes. The friendships feel real and the show trusts its young cast to carry weight.
But It's very much a spinoff that assumes you know the broader universe. If you haven't watched *The Vampire Diaries*, you'll feel lost in references.

Arcane: League of Legends2021
At its heart, a story about how power and class divide people who love each other. Both show that being right doesn't keep you safe, and that loyalty sometimes means losing everything.
Two young women on opposite sides of a war they didn't start, watching their friendship splinter across class lines. Visually extraordinary and emotionally devastating. It trusts you to understand complex motivations without spelling them out.
But The animation style is distinctive and not universally loved. It's also genuinely grim—hope is fragile here, and many characters pay the price for circumstances beyond their control.
