The Uncanny Counter
A Korean supernatural action series about a team of demon hunters posing as noodle-restaurant workers. It's energetic and earnest, blending martial-arts choreography with emotional character work and goofy found-family moments. For anyone who loves genre fun without cynicism—action that means something, humour that lands naturally, stakes that feel real.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you want a supernatural action series where a crew of hunters hides in plain sight, and the comedy of ordinary workplace routine sits right beside the fights.
Skip it if you need tight plotting and constant escalation, since its case-by-case rhythm can wander and the workplace gags sometimes repeat across two seasons.
What it asks of you: Settle in for 28 episodes across two seasons; the mood stays light and playful, with action arriving in short, sharp bursts rather than slow-burning dread.

My Roommate Is a Gumiho2021
Romantic fantasy with the same balance of action, comedy, and genuine tenderness. A supernatural being learning humanity through domestic life and unexpected connection. Equally committed to both spectacle and character.
But The romance takes centre stage in ways that might dilute the action focus you wanted. Slower-paced in the middle stretch.

Doom Patrol2019
Ragtag team of damaged people with powers learning to work together. Darkly funny, visually inventive, with supernatural threats that feel genuinely disturbing. Same found-family DNA as Counters.
But Considerably grittier and more violent. Structural issues in season two; the show wobbles before it ends.

The Exorcist2016
Procedural horror where a family faces possession alongside investigators with deep expertise. Builds dread methodically while exploring faith, doubt, and what it costs to protect others. Serious about its mythology.
But Genuinely upsetting at points. Less action-oriented; more about investigation and psychological horror than physical combat.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Hellboy2004
Both centre on a being society would call demonic or inhuman choosing to protect humanity alongside unlikely companions. Both find humour and heart in the gap between what their protagonist is and what they choose to be.
Guillermo del Toro's supernatural action film where a demon works for human hunters fighting the occult. Same core conceit inverted—the monster is the hero, the humans his found family. Gorgeous practical design, pulpy fun grounded in real emotion.
But More gothic and European in feel; less martial-arts kinetic energy. Del Toro's visual style is very specific; it doesn't move at The Uncanny Counter's pace.

Castlevania2017
Animated action series about warriors fighting supernatural evil with spectacular choreography and real emotional weight beneath the spectacle. Japanese-influenced style with Korean show's commitment to character.
But Anime; very stylised. Season one is brief; pacing becomes uneven as it expands.

Jinn2014
Turkish supernatural action film with similar energy: monsters hunted by a team with hidden abilities, practical effects, genuine stakes. Different cultural mythology but same appetite for grounded weirdness.
But Lower budget shows in the execution. Subtitled; some sequences are rougher than you'd expect.

The Midnight Meat Train2008
Stylish action-horror about uncovering a conspiracy involving supernatural beings operating beneath the city. Committed to both visceral thrills and odd mythology.
But Genuinely grotesque in parts. More body-horror than The Uncanny Counter ventures into; not for the squeamish.

Sleepy Hollow2013
Period action series with supernatural mythology, found-family dynamics, and the same willingness to be fun and unashamed about genre. Strong chemistry between leads doing impossible work together.
But Loses momentum badly as it goes on. The mythology gets bloated; later seasons feel like obligation.

Constantine2014
Grounded occult action where a demon hunter takes on supernatural threats with real consequences. Practical effects, atmospheric, committed to the cost of this work.
But Only one season before cancellation. Darker and more serious than The Uncanny Counter, with less levity or community warmth.

Mob Psycho 1002016
Same structure: a team of misfits with extraordinary abilities disguised as ordinary people, fighting invisible threats others can't see. Both understand that the real story isn't the action—it's learning to live with people who know what you actually are.
Anime about a powerful supernatural teen learning emotional control while fighting evil spirits with friends who have their own hidden abilities. Exceptional action animation, genuine character development, wildly funny, surprisingly moving about loneliness and connection.
But Anime; the style is very particular. Subtitled. Tonal shifts can be jarring—comedy to darkness to tenderness without warning.

Blood of Zeus2020
Both debut in 2020 with the same core alchemy: young protagonist discovering hidden power, learning to work with a dedicated team, fighting supernatural threats that embody something larger than individual evil. Both balance over-the-top action with moments of real vulnerability and earned warmth.
Anime about a young man discovering his divine lineage and fighting demons alongside a mentor and small team. Stunning hand-drawn action animation, genuine stakes, real humour, committed to both spectacle and intimate character moments.
But Anime; very stylised. The animation quality fluctuates. Plot beats can feel familiar if you know the genre well.
