A ravishing, ruthless two-hour film that transplants the exact seduction-as-warfare scheme into Joseon decades before this show existed — the blueprint, essentially.
But It's unflinching about where cruelty actually leads; the ending is far bleaker than most K-drama viewers expect.

The Western source of the whole engine — aristocrats using love as a weapon for sport — just moved from Joseon corridors to French salons.
Glenn Close and John Malkovich are magnificently venomous in the story every seduction-scandal plot since has quietly been rewriting.
But Stagey and dialogue-heavy 18th-century English pacing that will feel slower than a K-drama's momentum.
Cruel Intentions1999
It's the exact scandal-machine plot in a completely different costume and register — prestige menace swapped for campy, quotable trash.
Same wager-to-ruin-an-innocent plot, gleefully trashed up into a late-90s American prep-school soap — pure lurid fun if you want the scheme without the gravity.
But Dated teen-movie sheen and tone that's about as far from Scandal's restraint as it's possible to get.
