The Gong Show
Other titles called The Gong Show: the 1976 series (NBC).
- Absurdist comedy
- Light-hearted
- Dip in and out
Mike Myers revives the gonged variety show as a host and judge hybrid: three celebrity judges, one gong, and a parade of genuinely deranged talent acts. It's chaos on a budget, thriving on the gap between ambition and ability. For anyone who finds joy in failure and respects the fearless weirdos brave or foolish enough to perform.

America's Got Talent2006
The spiritual successor that actually works: bigger scope, genuine stars, and the same formula of rooting for underdogs while the judges deliver zingers. More polished, more stakes, more watchable week to week.
But It's slicker and more produced, which means less of the raw, anything-goes chaos that makes The Gong Show fun. Also very long and heavily padded with filler.

RuPaul's Drag Race2009
The same anarchic energy meets spectacle, with judges who genuinely enjoy tearing into weak performances. High production values don't soften the roasting, and the community aspect gives it real heart underneath the trash talk.
But It's fundamentally a competition with elimination stakes; you have to care about who wins. Also assumes familiarity with drag culture, which isn't everyone's entry point.

I'm Sorry2017
Also 2017 comedy chaos, also on TBS, also willing to fail loudly and weirdly. Sketch-based instead of variety, but with the same philosophy: commit to stupid premises completely and don't apologize.
But It's much meaner and more grotesque. If The Gong Show feels like comedy for people who like odd humans, this feels like comedy for people who enjoy discomfort.

Something you would not have found on your own.
The Gong Show Movie1980
The source material: this is what Chuck Barris actually built. Myers's version is an homage, but this is the original statement.
Chuck Barris's original is still the benchmark: weirder, cheaper, less mediated. Captures the true anything-goes spirit before it became a TV format. Barris hosting, genuinely strange acts, the feeling of no safety net.
But Film grain and '80s production values feel distant now. Also much slower paced than the TV show, and the comedy is less constructed—more just 'watch this weird thing happen.'

Whose Line Is It Anyway?1998
Improvisation on a gameshow frame, with high-wattage comedians and judges who keep things loose and laughing. Same spirit of 'let's see what happens when we don't have a script' but with slightly more structure.
But The comedy can feel safe and self-congratulatory—comedians riffing with each other rather than reaching. Much less outsider energy than The Gong Show.

The Comeback2005
Lisa Kudrow playing a delusional reality-TV star surrounded by humiliated handlers. Cringe comedy that finds its humor in failure and misreadings of the room—the same DNA as laughing at a bad talent act.
But It's awkward by design and exhausting if you don't find second-hand embarrassment fun. Also dated in its mockumentary framing.

Superstore2015
Ensemble comedy that finds absurdist humor in the margins: weird employees, odd customers, the strange small dramas of underpowered people doing their best. Lower stakes than The Gong Show but similar comedy DNA.
But It's a workplace sitcom at heart, meaning it prioritizes warmth and character arcs over pure chaos. Much more conventional than what you're getting from Myers.

I Love You, America with Sarah Silverman2017
Sarah Silverman's variety-sketch show from the same moment, equally weird and uncommercial. Guest performers, strange sketches, a host willing to go weird. Less about judging, more about celebration, but similar freedom.
But It's looser to the point of formlessness sometimes. Also relies heavily on Silverman's persona, which doesn't land for everyone.

Wayne2019
Sketch comedy that embraces bad ideas as a feature: characters played broad, scenes that go nowhere, the joy of commitment over polish. It's made by and for people who like things broken.
But The humor is very inside and very specific to the cast's sensibility. You're either on the frequency or you're not.

Punk'd2003
Real people put in weird situations with hidden cameras and judges finding humor in their confusion. Different format but same core: joy in the gap between expectation and reality.
But Feels dated now, and the prank premise can wear thin. Also depends on whether you find other people's genuine embarrassment amusing.

Carnivàle2003
The carnival as a gathering place for the broken and strange. Both see performers as fundamentally compelling regardless of talent or tragedy. Both ask you to love the weirdos.
A carnival setting, misfit performers, the Depression, genuine weirdness with dark religious undertones. It's what The Gong Show becomes if you drain the comedy and add existential dread—the same setting, completely different mood.
But It's slow, very dark, and asks you to invest in mythology that eventually ends on a cliffhanger. Nothing like the lightness of a variety show.
