The Chase is a quiz show where three everyday contestants race against a formidable trivia expert in high-speed rounds for cash prizes. It's tense and exhilarating, with genuine jeopardy—you root for the underdogs against a stacked deck. The appeal is watching ordinary people rise to the occasion under pressure, and seeing if they can outwit someone whose brain is essentially a search engine.

If you liked this

Jeopardy!1984

The gold standard of quiz shows. Elegant, unpredictable, and hosted by a legend. If you loved the trivia speed and stakes of The Chase, this is where the genre began.

But It's slower and more contemplative—less immediate drama, more meditative. No antagonist to root against.

Beat Shazam2017

Fast-paced, high-energy, with real people under real pressure. Uses the same format of building stakes and celebratory moments when contestants break through.

But It's music-only trivia, which narrows the range significantly. Less intellectual challenge, more pop culture recall.

Quiz Show1994

Barry Levinson's film about the 1950s quiz show scandal captures the genuine tension of people versus impossible questions, plus the darker side of what happens when money and knowledge collide.

But It's a slow, serious period drama about a historical scandal. No contestants cheering, no rising tension—it's all aftermath and moral weight.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Squid Game2021

Both pit brains against pressure. The Chase is what Squid Game would be if the competitors won money instead of risking death.

Same DNA as The Chase: ordinary people facing impossible tasks, building alliances, competing for life-changing money. But it's deadly serious—the stakes are existential, not financial. Watching people use intelligence and strategy to survive is gripping and morally complex.

But It's violent, brutal, and darkly depressing. The 'games' aren't quizzes—they're physical. South Korean, subtitled. Heavy viewing that stays with you for days.

Manhunt2017

Limited series with obsessive characters pursuing impossible puzzles under time pressure. The same cat-and-mouse energy, but with real stakes and genuine danger rather than prize money.

But Intense and dark—it's about a terrorist manhunt, not entertainment. Heavy subject matter. Much longer commitment than one episode.

The Floor2024

Recent ABC quiz show with a fresh mechanic: contestants control physical spaces on a grid. It has The Chase's speed and pressure, but adds visual strategy and team play.

But Newer format means fewer episodes exist. Less polished than The Chase, still finding its footing. The grid mechanic can feel gimmicky.

University Challenge1962

British team quiz show—serious, scholarly, genuinely difficult. The questions demand real knowledge, not just trivia recall. Young competitors competing at the highest level.

But It's in British English with British references. Much slower pacing than The Chase. Can feel exclusionary if you're not familiar with the cultural touchstones.

The Genius2013

Korean survival competition show with games of pure logic and strategy. Real people, real tension, genuine alliances and backstabbing. Brilliant game design.

But It's not quiz-based—it's strategy and deduction. Subtitled, with cultural context you may need to work into. Darker tone, less feel-good.

Only Connect2008

British puzzle show where contestants find hidden connections between seemingly unrelated clues. It's The Chase's intellectual cousin—challenging, clever, makes you work.

But Deliberately obscure. You will not know most answers. Feels designed to make you feel stupid, which some people hate.

Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?2007

Simple, approachable, genuinely funny. Shows that you don't need celebrity contestants or enormous stakes—just people trying their best and failing in entertaining ways.

But Often too easy, often too cutesy. The format has worn thin. Less competitive energy than The Chase, more condescension.

The Counterfeiters2007

Both explore how sharp minds perform when everything depends on getting it right. The tension is identical; only the setting has changed.

Austrian film about prisoners forced to forge currency during WWII. Like The Chase, it's about intelligence under pressure—but the stakes are survival, and the 'competition' is against both the guards and the impossible technical challenge itself.

But Slow, methodical, subtitled, set in a concentration camp. Bleak and unflinching. No quiz show energy—it's chamber drama about moral compromise.
