The Chase

Other titles called The Chase: the 2021 series (ABC).

A low-budget '90s action-comedy about an escaped convict who hijacks a car with the wrong hostage—she's the daughter of a millionaire—and triggers a media circus. It's scrappy, earnest, and completely unbothered by its own ridiculousness. Made for people who find absurdist humor in sincere incompetence.

Speed1994

A real blockbuster with the same DNA: relentless forward momentum, likeable leads under siege, and a premise so high-concept it transcends logic. But made with triple the budget and confidence.

But Genuinely tense in ways The Chase never attempts. If you want actual stakes and craft, this delivers; if you want charm, try the original.

Point Break1991

Late Keanu and Patrick Swayze in a chase movie that commits fully to its own absurdity. Surfer bank robbers, philosophical villains, genuine action sequences. It knows exactly what it is.

But Considerably more macho and considerably less funny. The tone is reverent, not self-aware.

Tango & Cash1989

Stallone and Russell with a buddy-cop chemistry that carries you through an intentionally ridiculous plot. It's aware of how dumb it is, and that's the whole point. Pure '80s action joy.

But Aggressively dated in all the ways The Chase is dated, but with worse hair and more ego. Some will find that annoying rather than charming.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Mad Max 21981

Both films are structured as pure chase—forward motion as plot. But Road Warrior weaponizes its simplicity into something mythic; The Chase keeps it lightweight and human-scaled.

The blueprint for chase-movie momentum and character-driven action. Made thirteen years earlier, with twice the intelligence and ten times the craft. The reason chase movies exist.

But Utterly serious. Australia in 1981 has no interest in being funny. If you're comparing The Chase to this, you'll feel frustrated with both.

While You Were Sleeping1995

A goofy, optimistic romantic comedy with Kristy Swanson in a lead role where she gets to be funny and vulnerable. It's sweet without being saccharine, and proves she had range.

But It's genuinely earnest about romance and family. No car chases, no chaos—just warmth and humor on a human scale.

True Lies1994

Released the same year, with similar DNA: absurdist action-comedy that mashes together incongruous elements and trusts you'll laugh at the collision. Tom Arnold steals every scene he's in.

But Costs about fifty times more and actually pulls off the spectacle. Can feel slick in ways The Chase refuses to.

Demolition Man1993

Stallone and Wesley Snipes in a fish-out-of-water action movie that's simultaneously ridiculous and oddly thoughtful. Funny without winking, competent without pretension.

But Has an actual idea underneath it. If you're looking for pure silliness without substance, this has too much brain.

Timecop1994

Van Damme splits timelines while fighting himself. It's exactly as sincere and bonkers as it sounds. A perfect encapsulation of mid-'90s action confusion.

But The plot doesn't hold up. Time travel logic collapses the moment you think about it. Some people find that liberating; others find it infuriating.

Die Hard: With a Vengeance1995

Bruised, grumpy action with Samuel L. Jackson and Jeremy Irons. It's less interested in the spectacle and more interested in problems-solving and banter.

But Grimy and exhausted, with real consequences. Nothing like the lightweight energy of The Chase.

Die Hard: With a Vengeance poster

Judge Dredd1995

Stallone in a dystopian action-comedy that's genuinely confused about its own tone and commits fully to it anyway. Pure genre pastiche. Herman's 1000 Corpses for the action world.

But Completely broken logically and narratively. It's not trying to work as a film; it's trying to be a wild ride.

Christine1983

Both make a car the protagonist of a story. Christine uses the car as metaphor and menace; The Chase uses it as circumstance. But both understand that a car in motion is cinema.

John Carpenter's film about a possessed car obsessed with its driver. Horror-comedy that treats the absurd premise with total sincerity. Genuinely creepy, genuinely funny, genuinely weird.

But It's a horror film first. If you're squeamish or hate body horror, the car-body-fusion stuff will not be fun.
