Penn & Teller: Fool Us
- Mystery
- Light-hearted
- Dip in and out
Penn & Teller: Fool Us is a magic competition show where performers try to outwit two legendary illusionists. It's engaging and playful—less about suspense and more about watching skilled magicians respect each other's craft. Perfect for anyone who enjoys magic, performance, and the simple pleasure of not knowing how something was done.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy watching craftsmen at work and get a kick from seeing a clever trick survive the scrutiny of two people who have spent decades exposing them, with the sleight-of-hand and misdirection on display rather than the chatter around it.
Skip it if you want a story with stakes that build, or you find magic tricks tiresome once you know they are tricks; each act is a self-contained burst, and the format repeats its shape episode after episode.
What it asks of you: Come in ready for short, self-contained bouts, one act after another in an hour, with the attention kept on hands and cards rather than on any thread that carries from one week to the next.

If you liked this
The Masked Singer2019
Like Fool Us, it's built on the joy of mystery and reveal. Celebrities hide their identities, judges guess, and the audience delights in being fooled. It captures that same spirit of performance and surprise without requiring any technical skill to enjoy.
But The format stretches thin over seasons. By the end, you're watching for celebrity spotting rather than genuine puzzlement, and the guessing can feel repetitive.

America's Got Talent2006
Variety acts competing, judges reacting authentically, and that unpredictable mix of exceptional talent and wonderful chaos. It has Fool Us's energy without the magic-specific focus, so there's something new in every act.
But It's inconsistent—some episodes are genuinely moving, others feel like filler. The show's length and pacing can test your patience.

David Copperfield1986
A legendary illusionist explaining some of magic's most iconic illusions. It has Fool Us's educational undertone—the satisfaction of understanding the craft, not just the mystery.
But Older production values, and knowing how tricks work can rob them of their magic. Some explanations are anticlimactic.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Sour Grapes2016
Both are ultimately about attention and misdirection. Fool Us celebrates it; Sour Grapes shows what happens when the same skills serve dishonesty.
A documentary about wine fraud and elaborate deception. It's structured like a magic trick—the setup, the misdirection, the reveal. The moral: sometimes the most impressive deceptions aren't illusions at all, they're crimes.
But It's morally murky and deeply sad. If you watch Fool Us for innocent fun, this explores what happens when fooling becomes exploitation.

Now You See Me2013
A heist film that treats magic as a serious craft and a plot device. If you love the skill and cleverness in Fool Us, this extends that into narrative filmmaking with genuine illusionists as consultants.
But The plot twists lean heavily on luck and contrivance. By the second act, the magic feels secondary to movie logic.

The Prestige2006
Two magicians locked in obsessive rivalry, obsessed with outdoing each other. It's Fool Us's competitive spirit transformed into psychological thriller, with real magic history woven through.
But It's dark and morally bleak. If you watch Fool Us for its warmth and wit, this will feel like a different beast entirely.

Criss Angel: Mindfreak2005
Street magic and illusions in documentary style, catching real reactions from strangers. It's performance-focused like Fool Us but in the wild, showing the human wonder that tricks can create.
But The production is trying very hard to be cool in a dated way. The editing is relentless and sometimes obscures the actual magic.

The Magic Castle
A documentary series about the famous private club where magicians perform for each other. It's Fool Us's competitive energy and mutual respect, captured in a real place with real stakes for the performers.
But It's slower and more niche than mainstream competition shows. If you don't already care about magic history, it won't convert you.
Arrested Development2003
Both understand that magic and deception are fundamentally about understanding your audience and controlling what they see. One celebrates it, one makes it tragic and funny.
Comedy about a family of con artists and magicians. It has Fool Us's playfulness and respect for misdirection, but in a narrative comedy where the magic is metaphorical—about hiding things, controlling perception, surviving with style.
But It's dense, self-referential, and extremely cynical about family and morality. Fool Us is warm; Arrested Development is ice-cold and strange.
