Television series
Pavitra Rishta
A multigenerational family drama about Archana and Manav navigating marriage, duty, and unexpected crises. It's emotionally raw where Indian TV often aims for melodrama, grounded in real financial strain and moral compromise. For anyone who loves watching ordinary people solve impossible problems with both stubbornness and love.

Balika Vadhu2008
Begins with a child bride and becomes unexpectedly radical: a story about a woman building autonomy within constraints, decade by decade. Genuinely moving without ever feeling manipulative. Character-driven television at its finest.
But Very long commitment. The early seasons are slow by design, which some will find meditative and others will find tedious.

Udaan2010
A father-son story set in a boarding school that understands the violence of masculine expectation without preaching about it. Visually stunning, emotionally precise. One of Hindi cinema's best films about what we owe and what we refuse.
But Bleak in places. The boy's predicament doesn't soften for comfort. Some will find it too austere.

Badhaai Ho2018
A comedy that treats middle-class family shame with both tenderness and comedy. About parents as sexual beings, about real economic anxiety, about what we inherit and what we choose to change.
But Some moments play for very broad laughs that undercut the sincere stuff. Tonal shifts can feel jarring.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Housefull 42019
Both are ultimately about recognition—about someone seeing you fully across time and circumstance, and choosing you anyway. Pavitra Rishta earns it slowly; Housefull 4 whispers it beneath the chaos.
A comedy about reincarnation that becomes, accidentally or not, genuinely moving about marriage and recognition across lifetimes. Absurd and warm-hearted, it has zero pretension and unexpected emotional wisdom.
But Slapstick and broad comedy that will feel juvenile to anyone not in the mood for it. It's earnestly goofy in a way that doesn't work if you're looking for sophistication.

Hindi Medium2017
About class anxiety and parental love expressed through education obsession. Funny and sad at once, with real observations about Indian parents and what they sacrifice and demand.
But Darker in the final act than the marketing suggests. Not everyone wants their comedy to curdle into something more complicated.

The Namesake2006
Multigenerational, bicultural, about obligation and identity and love that expresses itself through small refusals. Mira Nair directing prose that could only work in cinema. Beautiful and bruising.
But Slower than you might expect. Some find the emotional register too muted, the pacing too deliberate.

Lootera2013
A heist film that's secretly a love story, set in rural Bengal with extraordinary cinematography. Gentle in the most unexpected way, with real stakes both romantic and economic.
But The plot twist divides people. Some find it earned; others feel it undermines what came before.

Dil Dhadakne Do2015
A family drama disguised as a cruise ship movie. About marriages, about parents and children, about what loyalty costs. Zoya Akhtar directing with real affection for complicated people.
But Ensemble cast means nobody gets quite as much depth as they might. Some threads resolve tidily in ways the film has earned and others don't.

C.R.A.Z.Y.2005
Like Pavitra Rishta, it's about how families survive by failing each other in small ways and choosing each other anyway. But it's angrier, sadder, and entirely about men loving men when the world says they shouldn't.
A Quebec film spanning decades of a family's life, following a gay son and his complicated, loving, bewildered father. Wildly funny, genuinely tragic, with one of cinema's most honest father-son relationships. Pure cinema.
But In French with subtitles. Some will find the tonal shifts between farce and heartbreak disorienting. It's sexually frank in ways that might surprise you.
