Motherland: Fort Salem
Motherland: Fort Salem imagines a secret history where witches struck a peace deal with America three centuries ago, trading persecution for military service. It follows three young women training in combat magic at a mystical fort. Smart, strange, and genuinely strange in its gender dynamics, it walks the line between teen drama and grown-up warfare with surprising grace. Best for people who want their superhero origin story grounded and morally complicated.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like a military procedural where the magic is a job, with drills, chain of command and bureaucratic friction, and you enjoy watching young women get hardened by institutions that never quite trust them.
Skip it if you came for pure spectacle, since the earnest worldbuilding and barracks-level detail can feel slow, and the magic often reads as paperwork rather than fireworks.
What it asks of you: Thirty hour-long episodes across three seasons, so it asks for a long commitment and patience while loyalties and rivalries build slowly rather than all at once.

The Owl House2020
A younger show that nails the same alchemy: queer teens learning magic in a high-stakes world, with actual peril and character development that earns its emotional beats. The found-family arc hits harder.
But It's visibly a Disney cartoon, so the animation style and comedic timing may feel lighter than you want, especially early on.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer1997
The ancestral text. Young woman discovers magical destiny, bonds with complicated allies, trains in combat against existential threats. Buffy does the high school as metaphor better, but Motherland extends the idea into military adulthood.
But Seven seasons is a commitment, and the early episodes have genuine 90s camp that some find hard to get past.

The Magicians2015
Darker, sexier magic university where adults grapple with real consequences and moral ambiguity. If you liked Motherland's willingness to let good people do bad things, this goes further.
But Tonally erratic across seasons, and the plotting can feel overstuffed. The first season is better than what follows.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Revolutionary Girl Utena1997
Both use magical training as a metaphor for refusing scripts written for you, and both know that escape is more complicated than rebellion.
A girl in a magic academy learning swordfighting and self-determination, with a visual language that makes the metaphorical literal. Alien and intricate, but the core is about a young woman's refusal to be what the system demands of her.
But Deliberately surreal and symbolic rather than plot-driven. It doesn't cohere the way a Western show does, and it requires patience with obscurity.

Grimm2011
Hidden supernatural world nested inside the real one, with mythology-building that expands steadily. Good ensemble chemistry and a cop-show structure that keeps episodes moving.
But Creature-of-the-week format can feel repetitive, and the show doesn't always stick its tonal landings between procedural and serialized drama.

The Umbrella Academy2019
Found family of misfits with powers learning to work together against apocalyptic odds. Weird visual language and genuine heart, with a cast that commits fully to the material.
But Aggressively stylized and sometimes sacrifices clarity for style. The seasonal plotting can collapse under its own ambition.

The Witcher2019
A woman learning to harness her power in a world that fears and exploits her, surrounded by complicated allies. Large-scale fantasy action with real emotional stakes beneath the spectacle.
But The timeline structure in season one confuses many viewers, and the show is less focused on character development than on world-building.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina2018
Teen witch navigating two worlds and impossible moral choices, with a cast that takes dark material seriously. Strong supporting players and a willingness to let things get genuinely dark.
But The tone can shift jarringly between teen soap and cosmic horror, and some seasons lose the thread entirely.

Supergirl2015
Strong ensemble cast, girl-power themes executed with genuine warmth rather than cynicism, and weekly action that doesn't require total immersion in DC lore.
But Network TV constraints mean the action and stakes often feel smaller than they should. The serialized plotting can drag.

Shadow and Bone2021
Young woman discovers impossible power, trains for combat, learns her allies aren't what they seem. Lush production design and a cast that makes the melodrama work.
But Splits focus between multiple storylines, and not all of them land equally. The pacing stumbles when it shifts perspective.
