In Living Color is the sketch show that turned FOX's fledgling network into a cultural force: fast, loud, unapologetically Black, and gleefully rude to anyone in its path. Keenen Ivory Wayans built a repertory of future stars — Jim Carrey, David Alan Grier, his own siblings — and let them loose on politics, hip-hop, and each other. It's dated in places, thrilling in others, and never boring.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love sketch comedy built on fast, rubber-faced characters and a sense that the cast is going for broke every few minutes, with a music-video swagger running underneath.

Skip it if you want a single story or steady character arc, since every sketch restarts from zero and some of the rough edges of its early-nineties jokes show their age.

What it asks of you: Half an hour packed with short bits, one after another, means keeping up with constant shifts of tone and cast, and accepting that some will land flat.

Both came out of the same late-80s moment of Black artists using comedy as a weapon — Lee just let the joke curdle into tragedy instead of cutting to a commercial break.

Released the same year ILC was conceived, Spike Lee's film uses humor and heat to build toward something devastating about race in America — the serious cousin of ILC's satire.

But This stops being a comedy well before the end; it spends its laughs early on something much heavier.

MADtv1995

FOX's other big sketch swing, just as willing to go gross, weird, and political, and it ran for over a decade.

But Never matched ILC's cultural impact, and the later seasons drop off sharply in quality.

The Kids in the Hall1988

Canadian sketch troupe proving the format could go surreal and character-driven instead of topical, with a devoted cult following to prove it worked.

But Much weirder and less political than ILC; don't expect race or hip-hop as recurring subject matter.

Martin1992

Martin Lawrence's fast, physical sitcom shares ILC's love of oversized characters and quotable catchphrases, from the same explosive early-90s Black-sitcom boom.

But It's a sitcom, not sketch comedy — one set of characters every week instead of a fresh cast.

Def Comedy Jam1992

The stand-up showcase that ran alongside ILC and shared much of its comedic DNA, proving the voice worked without costumes or premises.

But Raw stand-up with minimal production values, and considerably raunchier than the sketch show.

Living Single1993

A sitcom from the same explosion of Black-led FOX programming, warm and character-focused where ILC is sharp and loud.

But Gentler and less satirical — skip it if you specifically want ILC's anarchic edge.

The Wayans Bros.1995

Shawn and Marlon Wayans extending the family's comic sensibility into a silly, big-hearted buddy sitcom.

But Considerably slighter than ILC — broad, low-stakes sitcom rather than satire with teeth.

The Richard Pryor Show1977

ILC's mix of political sketch comedy and unapologetic Black voice on network TV has a direct ancestor here — Pryor fought the same censors a decade earlier and lost the fight faster.

Thirteen years before ILC, Richard Pryor got his own NBC variety show and used it to smuggle real anger and razor wit past network censors.

But Cancelled after four episodes; the production is rough and it plays more like a museum piece than an easy watch now.

CB41993

Same comic engine ILC ran every week — sending up hip-hop image and media hype — just given a plot and a runtime instead of a three-minute sketch.

Chris Rock's mockumentary about a fake gangsta rap group takes ILC's satirical eye for hip-hop pretension and stretches it into ninety gleefully dumb minutes.

But Broad and silly in a way that hasn't aged perfectly; it's a spoof movie, not sharp satire throughout.
