Get Jiro
Get Jiro is a gloriously absurd action series where culinary excellence becomes a weapon. Set in a future LA where elite chefs wield actual power, it follows a sushi master pursuing vengeance through his craft. It's confidently weird, visually inventive, and moves with real momentum—Adult Swim at its best, treating a bonkers premise with complete conviction.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy animated action that treats kitchen rivalries like blood feuds, with sharp, gleeful absurdity and a stylish, cartoonishly violent streak you can laugh at.
Skip it if you want a grounded cooking drama or patient character study; this is a short, loud, mostly comic action romp where the food world is a battlefield.
What it asks of you: Six half-hour episodes, so a light evening commitment. It moves quickly and stays busy, asking you to keep up with a lot of spectacle and jokes rather than sit with quiet moments.

Kill Bill: Vol. 12003
A masterpiece of style-as-substance about vengeance through a singular craft. Like Jiro, it's supremely confident in its own weirdness and moves like a bullet. The aesthetic commitment is total.
But Nearly 2 hours of stylish violence with minimal plot engine to drive it. If you need character development or emotional stakes over pure momentum, this may feel hollow.

Castlevania: Nocturne2023
Anime-adjacent action series with genuine artistry in every fight scene. It builds a fully realized world and delivers the same sense of stakes and visual invention that makes Jiro tick without sacrificing real storytelling.
But Heavy reliance on lore from the games. New viewers can follow the main story, but you'll miss layers of fan satisfaction and reference.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners2022
A stylish, 10-episode anime about talent and desperation in a future built on hierarchy. The same aesthetic DNA—neon, precision, retrofuturism—but sadder. Every frame is composed like a painting.
But It's deeply depressing and doesn't offer the catharsis of action vindication. The tone is elegiac, and the ending refuses comfort.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Midnight Express1978
Both are stories about individual excellence as both salvation and weapon. Neither relies on superhuman powers—just skill, precision, and the will to survive. Vengeance through competence.
A visceral, propulsive film about mastery and endurance under pressure—a man with only his wits as a weapon. It has the same kinetic energy and righteous rage as Jiro, but earned through real suffering and real stakes.
But Based on a true story, which means real trauma and brutality, not stylized catharsis. It's ugly and angry rather than cool. Some viewers find it dated and exploitative.

John Wick2014
Vengeance as craft, executed with balletic precision. Like Jiro, it's a story about someone so good at one specific thing that it becomes philosophy. Keanu's commitment to the bit is absolute.
But If you need emotional justification beyond 'he was wronged,' the thin plot can feel like an excuse for set pieces. It's about style over substance intentionally.

Grendizer U2024
A gorgeously animated sci-fi action series about occupation, resistance, and learning to fight. It has real character work alongside the spectacle. The food element of Jiro translates here to mecha mastery.
But Subtitled, which demands attention. Also slower-paced than Jiro—it builds toward action rather than living in it constantly.

Pantheon2022
Adult Swim knows how to build atmosphere. This sci-fi thriller about AI and adolescence has the same commitment to visual detail and forward momentum. Only two seasons, both worthwhile.
But Cancelled abruptly, so it doesn't resolve cleanly. Also slower and more cerebral than Jiro—patience required.

Daria1997
A stylized show about competence and control in a absurd world. Daria's precision in navigating chaos mirrors Jiro's mastery. Drier than Jiro but made by people who knew exactly what they were doing.
But It's a '90s cartoon about high school. If you need action and stakes, this is meditative and small-scale by comparison.

Undone2019
Rotoscoped, surreal, and structurally adventurous. A woman discovers strange new abilities and pursues a mystery with focus and precision. It's visually unlike anything else and takes itself seriously in refreshing ways.
But Cancelled after one season on a cliffhanger. The pacing is deliberately slow and introspective—more art film than action series.

Kes1970
Both center on a protagonist for whom their craft becomes identity, sanctuary, and weapon all at once. Jiro cooks with violence; the boy with the hawk finds violence in care. Same engine, opposite registers.
A British social-realist film about a poor boy finding purpose and mastery through training a hawk. It's hypnotic, poetic, and deeply human. The bond between trainer and craft transcends the mundane world around it.
But It's a 1960s kitchen-sink drama, not an action film. Slow, contemplative, utterly unglamorous. No sushi, no vengeance—just quiet dignity that some will find too quiet.
