China, IL

China, IL is a deliberately incompetent comedy about the worst university in America, where nothing educational happens and every authority figure is a disaster. Brad Neely's absurdist humor thrives in the chaos: non-sequiturs, surreal tangents, and characters who exist in their own logic. It's for people who love broken narratives and comedy that doesn't explain its own jokes.

TVMaze rating2.4

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you find the bleakly silly, dialogue-heavy kind of humor where a dumb premise gets pushed past the point of reason, and you enjoy one man's cracked voices carrying every character.

Skip it if the jokes are crude and the rhythm is scattershot, so if you need a story that holds together or characters you can warm to, the constant chaos will wear thin.

What it asks of you: Half-hour episodes of fast, relentless noise; it asks you to surrender to the rambling and stop waiting for a plot to tighten.

Community2009

A smart ensemble comedy set at a community college where the dean is incompetent and the institution itself is the joke. Both shows find humor in institutional dysfunction and character weirdness rather than plot.

But Community leans more earnest and heartfelt as it progresses; China, IL stays committed to pure absurdism throughout, which some find exhausting.

30 Rock2006

Rapid-fire jokes, a chaotic workplace nobody would actually want to work at, and a cast of unhinged characters played by great comedians. Both thrive on density and strange tangents over narrative.

But 30 Rock is more polished and network-friendly; China, IL is deliberately rough and proudly indifferent to whether you follow it.

Frisky Dingo2006

Adult Swim absurdism at its finest: bizarre voice acting, non-sequiturs that land, and a world that operates on its own insane logic. Same network energy, same commitment to the weird.

But It's deliberately hard to follow and leans heavily on inside jokes and tonal whiplash. Not interested in making things easy for you.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

The Eric Andre Show2012

Both deconstruct a familiar format (college, late-night TV) by making everyone in charge completely incompetent and treating that breakdown as the entire premise.

A late-night talk show that's actually a structured breakdown of talk-show logic itself. Like China, IL, it's comedy through institutional failure and characters who shouldn't be trusted with responsibility. Both use their format as the joke.

But It's deeply awkward and often uncomfortable rather than funny; relies on you finding cringe hilarious. Not a comedy for people who need warmth.

Metalocalypse2006

Adult Swim's other masterpiece: comedy that builds a complete world where terrible people are treated as serious subjects. Both shows find humor in absolute commitment to absurd premises.

But Long stretches are aggressively dumb, and the humor relies on repetition. If that doesn't work for you early, it won't later.

Ugly Americans2010

A cartoon about a social worker in a city full of monsters that prioritizes weirdness over sense. Same scrambled-egg logic, same willingness to throw out coherence for a laugh.

But Animation quality is intentionally crude; the show's chaotic pacing exhausts some viewers faster than the concept entertains them.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia2005

A comedy about incompetent people doing incompetent things where nobody learns anything. Both shows treat their casts as irredeemable and milk humor from their own dysfunction.

But It's Sunny is darker and more grounded; China, IL is dreamlike. The tone shift might disappoint if you want one or the other.

Xavier: Renegade Angel2007

Peak Adult Swim chaos: nonsensical plot, surreal animation, characters who speak in broken philosophy. A spiritual cousin in commitment to being genuinely weird rather than just crude.

But It's even more opaque than China, IL. Some episodes seem designed to frustrate rather than entertain, and that's not a bug.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force2000

The show that proved Adult Swim could be brilliant without making sense. Similar deadpan absurdism, similar willingness to waste time on nothing, same comfort in the weird.

But Runs for fifteen seasons; quality is wildly inconsistent. Much of it is just people talking in an apartment, which tests patience.

Beef House2020

A one-season Adult Swim miniseries about a surreal theme park. Newer, shorter, and similarly committed to mood over narrative sense and weird for weird's sake.

But Feels more like a sketch extended too long; harder to stay invested when there's no character anchoring you to the weirdness.

The Righteous Gemstones2019

Same creator energy—Danny McBride, like Brad Neely, builds worlds where nobody is competent but everyone is committed to their own broken logic. McBride just adds actual stakes.

Danny McBride's prestige dramedy about a corrupt megachurch family. Genuinely character-driven and often moving, but with the same comfort in chaos and the same cast of people you'd never want to know. McBride doing the opposite register proves the DNA is there.

But Serious and sentimental in ways China, IL never is. If you want pure comedy with no emotional weight, this will feel like betrayal.

Too Many Cooks2014

Both use format itself as the subject. China, IL deconstructs college as a premise; Too Many Cooks deconstructs the sitcom. Both treat familiar structures as something to break apart rather than work within.

A 12-minute short film that deconstructs sitcom format by becoming increasingly unhinged. Pure structure-as-joke, same as China, IL, but compressed and more nightmarish. One perfect watch that feels like a fever dream.

But It's actually unsettling; the comedy turns genuinely disturbing. If you want comfort, this is the opposite. And 12 minutes is either a feature or a cruel tease, depending on your mood.
