Ugly Americans
- Comedy
- Urban fantasy
- Strange
A grimy, fearlessly silly animated comedy about a social worker managing impossible cases in a New York where monsters are real and need bureaucratic help. Gross-out gags meet genuine heart; it's gleefully tasteless but oddly warm-hearted. For anyone who loved early South Park's chaos and doesn't mind animation that looks deliberately cheap.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like satire that pokes at bureaucracy and urban cynicism with a grin, and you enjoy monster-of-the-week chaos where the supernatural is just another tiresome neighbor to be filed and managed.
Skip it if you want a tidy, sincere horror show; this one undercuts its scares constantly with crude jokes and an abrasive, self-mocking tone that some viewers will find grating rather than funny.
What it asks of you: Each episode runs about half an hour and keeps its jokes coming quickly, so you'll need to tolerate a lot of gags, some of them deliberately vulgar, and not much of a slow build.

Futurama1999
The gold standard of comedy-SF animation: funny, inventive, occasionally devastating. Shares Ugly Americans' gift for silly premises that somehow become emotionally resonant by episode's end.
But The constant cancelled-and-revived cycle means inconsistent tone across seasons. Some episodes prioritize plot over laughs.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force2000
Absurdist, deliberately low-effort animation with genuinely weird humor and characters you grow weirdly attached to. No plot, just vibes and chaos, which is exactly Ugly Americans' energy.
But The humor is deliberately obtuse and goes nowhere. If you need narrative momentum or a punchline you can see coming, this will drive you up the wall.

30 Rock2006
Fast, dense comedy about workplace dysfunction with a heart underneath. Like Ugly Americans, it's about competent people managing absurd situations through sheer stubborn decency.
But Depends entirely on network-TV comedy timing and references that date it badly. Gentler than you might want if you loved Ugly Americans' edge.

Something you would not have found on your own.
What We Do in the Shadows2014
Both treat supernatural roommate scenarios as intimate human comedy, finding the mundane and sad inside monster mythology. Same DNA, wildly different register.
A mockumentary where vampire roommates bicker about life and survival. Shares Ugly Americans' core joke—taking monster logistics seriously—but plays it deadpan instead of anarchic. Genuinely hilarious and oddly tender.
But The humor is extremely dry and character-based; if you need zingers and visual gags, the static documentary format will bore you.

The Venture Bros.2003
Animated comedy that builds a genuine world across seasons, mixing genre pastiche with real character growth. Same ratio of trash jokes to surprising emotional depth as Ugly Americans.
But Glacial pacing, especially early on. The show assumes you'll stick around for payoffs that come seasons later.

Paradise PD2018
Unabashedly crude animated comedy about misfits in a small town. Shares Ugly Americans' willingness to be intentionally terrible in service of actual jokes, not just shock value.
But Genuinely hits the wall sometimes—shock becomes the joke rather than the vehicle for it. Wildly uneven in quality per episode.

Clone High2002
Teen comedy anime-style parody where historical figures are high school clones. Absurdist premise that lets genuine pathos sneak in; similar blend of stupid and sweet.
But Only two seasons, cancelled young, and some episodes feel like the writers were figuring it out. The nostalgia hook might not land if you didn't grow up with it.

Metalocalypse2006
Gleefully stupid metal-band comedy that somehow manages real character arcs and even poignant moments. Nasty humor undercut by affection for the idiots you're watching.
But The animation is deliberately terrible even by Adult Swim standards. If visuals matter to you, this will test your patience.

Brickleberry2012
Raunch-comedy about park rangers that doesn't care about taste or restraint. If you love Ugly Americans' shamelessness and don't need jokes to have a clean landing, this scratches that itch.
But Joke density is low; a lot of stretches between laughs. Shock value sometimes substitutes for actual comedy.

China, IL2011
Deliberately crude adult animation about professors at a terrible college. Keeps Ugly Americans' spirit of comedy without punchlines, character-based absurdity, and a weird fondness for its weirdos.
But Extremely niche humor that can feel impenetrable. The lack of conventional structure means some viewers find it more exhausting than funny.

Harley Quinn2019
Both are crude comedies that structure themselves around an incompetent protagonist trying to help/manage impossible people and situations. Same comedic engine, different fictional worlds.
Raucous adult animated comedy about a supervillain trying to rebuild her life in Gotham. Filthy, genuinely clever, and somehow builds real stakes and character arcs. Animated cartoons for adults done right.
But Relies on you knowing DC lore to get half the jokes. The animation style is busy to the point of distraction.

In the Flesh2013
Identical structural premise: monster/other trying to exist in human society, managed by sympathetic humans. But where Ugly Americans mines it for comedy, In the Flesh uses it to explore trauma and systemic cruelty.
British supernatural drama about zombies reintegrating into society after being cured. Takes the integration premise seriously—Ugly Americans' exact conceit—but plays it as genuine tragedy and social allegory about prejudice.
But It's genuinely dark and angry, not a comedy. If you want laughs, you will be disappointed. Requires patience with slow-burn storytelling.
