Charlotte
Other titles called Charlotte: the 2017 film.
Charlotte is a 13-episode anime about teenagers who develop supernatural abilities during puberty. It's a high-school drama that swings between comedic slice-of-life and devastating emotional turns, blending coming-of-age vulnerability with existential stakes. For anyone who loved the genre-mixing whiplash of Steins;Gate or the character depth of Your Name, this hits hard and fast.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love school-life stories where ordinary friendships and awkward teenage secrets slowly tilt into something stranger, and you don't mind a show that trusts you to wait for the ideas to land.
Skip it if you want a fast, action-driven ride from the first minute, since its early episodes take their time establishing the everyday world at a leisurely pace.
What it asks of you: Thirteen short episodes of about twenty-five minutes each, so it asks for a few evenings of patience with a slow, quiet opening and a tone that gradually shifts.

Steins;Gate2011
Time travel, high stakes, and a cast you'll genuinely love. Builds from playful sci-fi shenanigans into something genuinely consequential. The emotional payoff earned every twist.
But Slow first half while it establishes tone and rules. The pacing demands patience before the urgency kicks in.

Your Name.2016
A film that understands how to make supernatural powers feel intimate and personal rather than world-breaking. The same sense that small moments between characters matter more than spectacle.
But Heavily reliant on emotion rather than plot clarity. A few narrative threads feel unresolved by design, which frustrates some viewers.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu2006
Genre-defying comedy that becomes genuinely unsettling. A school club investigating the strange, with characters you grow attached to quickly. Similarly unpredictable in tone.
But The narrative is deliberately fractured and non-linear. If you need straightforward storytelling, this will feel needlessly obtuse.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Assassination Classroom2013
Both use school settings and ensemble casts to ground supernatural stakes in character relationships. Both are unafraid to pivot from comedy to tragedy within an episode.
Captures Charlotte's core trick: comedy and genuine warmth interrupted by sudden emotional devastation. A class bonds with a strange teacher while contending with existential stakes. Teacher-student relationships are central and real.
But The premise—kill your teacher—can feel tonally confused. Tonal whiplash is intentional but not everyone responds to being yanked around emotionally.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story2020
Cute girls, magical powers, and a story that systematically dismantles both tropes with surgical precision. Gorgeous, devastating, and far smarter than it appears at first glance.
But The tonal shift is abrupt and brutal. If you go in expecting a conventional magical girl show, the whiplash can feel cheap rather than earned.

Jujutsu Kaisen2020
Stunning animation paired with a cast that feels real and vulnerable. Powers come with genuine cost. Builds emotional investment in characters before making you care desperately about the stakes.
But Incredibly violent in ways that go beyond action-movie violence. Some arcs drag longer than necessary, testing patience.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru.2013
Sharp writing about social isolation and connection. Characters feel like real teenagers wrestling with belonging, not archetypes. Humor lands because it's grounded in genuine observation.
But Deliberately slow-burn. Very little happens in the plot sense. If you want adventure or high stakes, this is purely character work.

Hataraku Maou-sama!2013
A show that takes a silly premise and actually lives in it. The tone is light and funny but characters develop genuine stakes and relationships. Proof that comedy and heart aren't opposed.
But The plot is thin and episodic. It's about moments and banter rather than narrative momentum. Second season is weaker.

Sora yori mo Tooi Basho A Story that leads to the Antarctica2018
Four girls, genuine friendship, real obstacles that matter. Adventure without losing sight of character vulnerability. Balances comedy, emotion, and actual stakes with grace.
But The anime-isms can feel heavy-handed at times. Some emotional beats feel slightly manipulative rather than earned through character logic.

Sex/Life2021
A man rewound to high school explores what it means to belong and grow up. Quietly moving, funny, and interested in the emotional texture of adolescence. Smaller scale than Charlotte but similarly character-focused.
But The ending feels rushed and incomplete. A final special episode attempts to resolve things but leaves many threads dangling unsatisfyingly.

Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei2010
Both are coming-of-age stories about young people recognizing that their choices have shaped them. Both are deeply interested in time, regret, and the paths not taken.
A completely different register: experimental, poetic, visually overwhelming. A student's four years of university collapsed into one hypnotic journey through choice and consequence. About potential and regret, the same emotional core as Charlotte.
But Aggressively experimental visually. The rapid dialogue and design choices are intentionally disorienting. Not for anyone wanting conventional narrative or clarity.

A Silent Voice: The Movie2016
Both explore how adolescent powers or abilities isolate you socially. Both ask whether redemption is possible after harm. Both prioritize character guilt and growth over spectacle.
A film about disability, bullying, redemption, and the weight of your own cruelty. Visually stunning and emotionally raw without sentimentality. Characters develop across time through genuine confrontation with themselves.
But Heavy subject matter with minimal lightness. The guilt and shame never fully resolve. Some find it punishingly bleak rather than cathartic.
