Avatar: Seven Havens

Avatar: Seven Havens picks up generations after Korra, following a new Avatar in a post-apocalyptic world where her existence is seen as a threat rather than salvation. It's sprawling, high-stakes worldbuilding with the signature blend of martial arts action, spirit magic, and character-driven drama that made the originals matter. For fans hungry to return to that universe and newcomers who love fantasy with real emotional stakes.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you loved the bending duels and close-knit travelling crew of the earlier Avatar shows and want a new hero who carries that lineage's weight.

Skip it if you want a light, self-contained adventure, because this bleak post-collapse world and its hunted heroine carry a heavy, serialised weight.

What it asks of you: Expect a single season of thirteen episodes, a grim tone under the bright bending, and steady attention to a mystery that unfolds across the whole run.

The Legend of Korra2012

The direct predecessor that shaped this world and its rules. Four seasons of Avatar mythology expanded into complex politics, spiritual warfare, and a protagonist learning to lead through doubt rather than certainty. Essential context.

But The middle seasons lose some focus, and the animation quality dips noticeably. Pacing can feel uneven across the full run.

Attack on Titan2013

Apocalyptic survival fantasy where every character is hunted, civilization is shrinking, and the rules keep changing. Massive scope, genuine stakes, twists that reframe everything you thought you knew about the world and its factions.

But Relentlessly dark and violent. The final arc divides the fanbase sharply on where the story lands thematically.

Avatar: The Last Airbender2005

The foundation. Three seasons of perfectly calibrated world-building, character arcs, and action storytelling. If you haven't seen it, start here. It genuinely deserves the acclaim and changed what animated TV could do.

But Early seasons have a cartoonish tone that some find precious rather than charming. The animation is dated, though that's rarely the problem people think it is.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood2009

Both center a young female protagonist grappling with being humanity's last hope in a fractured world, and both refuse to let that title be redemptive or simple.

A girl discovers she's the key to understanding a catastrophic mistake that shattered her world. Unlike Avatar, it's deeply philosophical about the cost of power and the impossibility of true salvation. Same emotional DNA, entirely different register and scope.

But Starts slow with standalone episodes before the larger mythology emerges. The animation quality varies significantly across the 64-episode run.

Castlevania: Nocturne2023

Supernatural action anime with stunning visual design and real emotional weight. Multiple characters with competing agendas in a collapsing world, fighting both monsters and each other. Atmospheric and propulsive at once.

But The shift in tone and cast from the original Castlevania series will alienate some. Some plot threads resolve too quickly to satisfy.

Arcane: League of Legends2021

Visually stunning worldbuilding across two vastly different societies with conflicting values. Character work is extraordinary. It proves animated action drama can hit as hard as live-action, with more visual invention.

But The pacing is slow and methodical; some feel the payoff doesn't justify the buildup. The animation style is deliberately stylized, which reads as cold to some viewers.

The Witcher2019

Grimdark fantasy with monster-hunting spectacle and a cynical protagonist forced into leadership. World-building through conflict and moral ambiguity. Seasons 1 and 2 move through large mythological stakes with real consequences.

But Season 3 drops in quality noticeably and the show was cancelled. The timeline juggling in season 1 confuses many viewers on first watch.

Demon Slayer2019

Gorgeously animated action with a driven hero learning to master supernatural power while grief shapes every decision. Each arc builds momentum. The emotional core never gets buried under spectacle, no matter how beautiful the fight scenes are.

But The plot is fairly straightforward and the supporting cast gets minimal development. It can feel slight compared to its visual ambition.

His Dark Materials2019

High-fantasy adventure where a young protagonist discovers hidden truths about her world and her own significance. Multiple worlds, spiritual elements, and genuine peril. Strong ensemble cast supporting the central narrative.

But The three-season run feels rushed toward the end. The latter seasons lose some of the intimacy that made the first one special.

The Owl House2020

A young woman learns she has power that doesn't fit the world's rules, gets hunted for it, and discovers that her twin connection and found family are more important than destiny itself.

Animated series that builds a supernatural world across three seasons with real character stakes, found family, and a protagonist who saves the day through connection rather than power alone. The magic system and world-building have genuine texture and consequence.

But Marketed and structured as a kids' show, though it grows darker and more complex in season 3. The cancellation meant season 3 is rushed and felt incomplete by some fans.
