Touched

A 2024 German-Icelandic drama about Maria, a caregiver who begins a forbidden, intensely physical relationship with Alex, a paraplegic resident. The film is unflinching about desire, vulnerability, and power imbalances—watching it means sitting with discomfort. For those drawn to cinema that refuses easy answers about love and dependency.

The Souvenir2019

A young film student becomes entangled with an older man in a relationship that's simultaneously tender and corrosive. Like Touched, it's a precise portrait of how love can coexist with manipulation and harm.

But The pacing is glacial and the emotional payoff is deliberately muted. If you need catharsis, this isn't it.

A Ghost Story2017

Two people bound together by love and circumstance, exploring what happens when one can no longer leave. It shares Touched's willingness to sit in the unbearable space between intimacy and isolation.

But Conceptually strange and deliberately slow. The premise might feel gimmicky if the emotional weight doesn't land for you.

Climax2018

Gaspar Noé's film about dancers whose lives spiral into chaos—it has the same unflinching gaze at desire, bodies, and how intimacy can turn predatory. Visually and narratively fearless.

But Graphic sexual and violent content. The style is provocative to the point of being deliberately alienating; it doesn't want your comfort.

Rust and Bone2012

Both films center on bodies marked by limitation or trauma, and both insist that desire and care can exist in those spaces without being redemptive or simple. Rust and Bone finds hope where Touched finds only complexity.

Jacques Audiard's film about a drifter and an orca trainer who loses her legs. Like Touched, it's unashamed about sexuality and physical bodies, but it finds tenderness alongside the damage—a very different register.

But The first half is brutal and the male lead is morally adrift. Audiard doesn't make it easy to like him, even as you're watching his transformation.

Fish Tank2009

Andrea Arnold's debut follows a young woman whose attraction to a man in her mother's life becomes obsessive and dangerous. It captures that same queasy collapse of boundaries and self-preservation.

But The protagonist is difficult to root for and the ending offers no redemption. British social realism can feel punishing.

A Separation2011

Asghar Farhadi's masterpiece about a marriage dissolving, but what matters is how two people can love each other and still cause irreparable harm. The moral complexity mirrors Touched's refusal to assign blame cleanly.

But It's a courtroom drama at heart, which some find procedurally dry. The emotional devastation accumulates slowly.

The Fountain2006

Three timelines, one love story spanning centuries. Like Touched, it's obsessed with how bodies, desire, and dependency become inseparable from identity and meaning.

But Darren Aronofsky's maximalism can feel pretentious. If you're not with the film's emotional logic early on, the spectacle becomes exhausting.

Dogville2003

Lars von Trier's parable about a woman dependent on a small town's charity, only to discover exploitation hiding behind kindness. The power dynamics and hidden cruelty echo Touched's themes.

But Deliberately theatrical and bleak. Von Trier's worldview can feel nihilistic, and the film is punishing in its final act.

Another Year2010

Mike Leigh's quiet study of a happy marriage and the people around it who are struggling. It observes loneliness and dependency with surgical precision and dark humour.

But Nothing happens. If you're looking for plot, you'll find only the texture of ordinary misery.

Funny Games2008

Michael Haneke's remake of his own Austrian film—a deeply unsettling examination of violence, vulnerability, and the power dynamics between captors and captives. Touches on similar moral vertigo.

But It's designed to make you miserable and angry. Haneke doesn't offer catharsis; he offers accusation.

Scenes from a Marriage2021

Where Touched captures the intensity of a forbidden relationship at its height, Scenes from a Marriage shows what happens when intimacy calcifies into routine and resentment. They're studying the same architecture from different angles.

Bergman's miniseries dissects a marriage across decades, episode by episode, like watching intimacy become estrangement in real time. It's cinema's most honest document of how two people can be bound to each other and still be alone.

But Shot in television 4:3 and deliberately static. It predates modern pacing by half a century. You have to surrender to boredom to find the depth.
