A New Jersey janitor gets bullied into a vat of toxic waste and comes out the other side as a hulking, mop-wielding vigilante who mops up the town's criminals — literally, and with extreme prejudice. Troma's signature blend of gore, gags, and genuine sweetness under all the slime. It's cheap, it's dumb on purpose, and it's more fun than it has any right to be.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love gleefully lowbrow splatter comedy where the gore is cartoonish, the satire of corporate greed and bullies is blunt, and the Troma-style bad taste is the point rather than a flaw.

Skip it if you want polished effects or a tight plot, since this one sprawls, the jokes often land with a thud, and the grotesque humour can wear thin well before the 110 minutes are up.

What it asks of you: It asks you to meet it on its own rough terms: a long, loose, deliberately crude ride with frequent shifts of tone, where you need patience for slow stretches and a strong stomach for abrupt violence.

Strip away every joke and splatter effect from Toxic Avenger and you're left with this: a gentle outcast disfigured by a hostile world, and the question of who the real monsters are.

David Lynch's devastating, tender true story of a disfigured man mocked and abused by a cruel public, before finding unexpected kindness — the same bones as Toxic Avenger's outcast-turned-monster story, played entirely straight.

But There is no gore, no jokes, and no revenge fantasy — just quiet, aching sorrow.

The Return of the Living Dead1985

Punk-rock zombies, gore played entirely for laughs, and a soundtrack that slaps — it's the same 80s trash-comedy engine with a different monster under the hood.

But More ensemble comedy than solo-hero revenge fantasy, so the emotional throughline is thinner.

Mad science, absurd gore, and a lead performance so unhinged it becomes hilarious — a slicker but equally gleeful cousin to Toxic Avenger's chaos.

But Even fans of extreme horror find it exhausting; the plot is thin excuse between eruptions of viscera.

Same origin story — an abused nobody transformed by an accident into something with terrifying strength — but played as sober tragedy instead of splatstick comedy, showing how dark this exact premise can go.

A bullied teenager gains inhuman power and slowly, believably curdles into something dangerous — found-footage restraint standing in for Toxic Avenger's cartoon chaos, but asking the same question about power and vengeance.

But Serious, slow-building, and largely humorless — nothing like the campy gross-out romp you came from.
