The Toxic Crusaders

A children's cartoon spin-off of Troma's cult splatter film, starring a nerdy teenager transformed by toxic waste into a deformed superhero. It's earnest, weird, and genuinely committed to its premise—part *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles*, part environmental PSA, entirely unafraid of being grotesque. For kids who liked their cartoons strange and adults curious about 90s syndication chaos.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles1990

The obvious DNA relative: teenage heroes, mutation origin, ensemble cast, rapid-fire comedy and action. If you loved the basic formula of nobodies-turned-freaks-saving-the-world, this is the definitive version.

But It's been done to death and refined into blandness by endless sequels. The original cartoon is great, but you've probably already seen it or something like it.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers1990

Shared DNA with *Toxic Crusaders* on the environmental crusade front, but executed with far bigger resources and star power. Earnest, campy, and weirdly effective at making you care about pollution.

But It can feel preachy compared to *Toxic Crusaders*' weirder edge. If you want transgression and grotesquerie, this is too clean and sponsored-feeling.

Biker Mice from Mars1993

Another syndicated oddity about unlikely heroes (motorcycle-riding mice) fighting for justice. Same era energy, same willingness to be visually strange and never quite explain itself.

But Fewer environmental themes and more generic action. The premise is weirder but the execution less grounded—it commits less fully to its own strangeness.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

The Toxic Avenger1984

The cartoon is a direct, cleaned-up adaptation of this film. Watching it is like seeing the same story told in two completely different registers—same superhero origin, opposite tone.

The source material itself: Troma's legendary splatter comedy that started it all. If you love the cartoon's bizarre premise, see where it came from—brutal, funny, completely unhinged.

But It's gory, sexual, and transgressive in ways the cartoon couldn't dream of. Not for anyone expecting family-friendly content; this is cult exploitation cinema.

Exosquad1993

Ambitious 90s CGI-hybrid action cartoon with real stakes, character development, and a serialized story. If you like mutation-as-transformation narratives played seriously, this goes deeper.

But It's earnest where *Toxic Crusaders* is absurd. Less comedy, more melodrama—longer and slower if you want quick laughs.

Earthworm Jim1995

A worm accidentally gaining superhero powers and fighting pollution and injustice. Surrealist energy, genuine weirdness, and a willingness to be grotesque for comedy and meaning both.

But Aggressively weird in a way that can feel scattershot. It's more interested in chaos than coherence—the plot is sometimes hard to follow.

The Real Ghostbusters1986

A genuine classic that shares the ensemble-of-nobodies-against-the-weird vibe. Smarter writing, better animation, and it influences everything *Toxic Crusaders* attempts.

But It's the obvious predecessor everyone already knows. You're probably looking for something less mainstream than this.

Defenders of the Earth1986

Both are syndicated cartoons betting everything on the idea that kids will root for heroes precisely because they're underdogs or grotesques. Both trust that bet completely.

A syndie cartoon where children of famous comic heroes band together against evil. It has the same 80s/90s earnestness about kid heroes saving the world, but with recognizable IP and better animation quality.

But Feels more corporate and less weird than *Toxic Crusaders*—it's playing it safer with established characters rather than inventing its own mutation mythology.
