The Overnighters

A documentary following a North Dakota pastor who opens his church to transient oil workers during the boom, only to face consequences he never anticipated. Intimate and unflinching, it's a portrait of American desperation, faith tested, and how charity can shatter when it meets human complexity. For anyone interested in documentaries that earn their emotional weight.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like documentaries that trust ordinary people to reveal themselves, and you don't mind moral questions that stay unresolved long after the credits roll.

Skip it if you want a tidy arc or a clear villain, because this stays messy, sometimes uncomfortable, and never gives you a comforting verdict on the people it follows.

What it asks of you: Roughly an hour and forty minutes of patient watching, with long stretches of quiet waiting, cramped rooms and slow accumulation rather than set-piece payoffs.

Winter's Bone2010

A young woman searches for her missing father in the Ozark backwoods, navigating poverty, family loyalty, and quiet menace. Like The Overnighters, it finds dignity and moral ambiguity in desperate circumstances and closed communities.

But Slow-moving and bleak, with little relief or comfort. The ending doesn't resolve everything neatly.

The Farewell2019

A family gathers in China, bound by love and lies, as they decide whether to tell their grandmother she's dying. Both films trust viewers to sit with moral complexity and competing goods, never letting anyone off easy.

But Can feel airless and tense. Some may find the central deception hard to root for, even when the love behind it is clear.

Nomadland2021

Follows real drifters and workers across America's temporary economies, finding resilience and community in transience. Like The Overnighters, it observes without judgment and finds richness in lives society overlooks.

But Meditative pace. If you need plot momentum or conventional drama, this will feel like watching paint dry.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Upstream Color2013

Both films treat their audience as intelligent enough to sit with uncertainty and incomplete information, trusting that emotional truth matters more than plot clarity.

A man and woman wake up having been manipulated and controlled in ways they don't fully understand, then build a relationship from the wreckage. Like The Overnighters, it's about how we're shaped by forces beyond our control and how we choose to move forward.

But Deliberately cryptic and abstract. You will not understand what's happening. Watching it feels like piecing together a puzzle with missing pieces.

The Florida Project2017

Children and their parents live hand-to-mouth in budget motels outside Disney World. It captures survival, poverty, and human kindness with such tenderness that it breaks your heart quietly, the way The Overnighters does.

But Sparse plot. Some viewers find the meandering slice-of-life structure frustrating rather than moving.

Hoop Dreams1994

A documentary following two basketball players over five years as they chase a way out of poverty. Like The Overnighters, it reveals how desperation can seduce us into impossible dreams, and how institutions fail individuals.

But Nearly three hours long. Its slow accumulation works for some viewers and exhausts others.

American Animals2018

Four college students plan a library heist. It's half-film, half-documentary interviews, weaving how they remember it versus what happened. Shares The Overnighters' fascination with how people justify themselves and rationalize choices.

But The switching between dramatization and interview footage can feel gimmicky. The humor sits uneasily next to the crime.

Assault on Precinct 131976

A documentary about a man who builds tiny homes for unhoused people in California. Quiet moral conviction in action, examining both charity's limits and the people it touches, much like The Overnighters.

But Very earnest and intentional in its message. Some find it slightly preachy or too neat in its resolutions.

God's Country2022

A woman's land dispute in rural Montana spirals into conflict with her neighbors. It captures rural America's isolation, faith, and the way good people can become ruthless over principle.

But Tense and claustrophobic. The moral positions are so entrenched that viewing it can feel bleak and draining.

The Mule2018

Both examine how men rationalize bad choices through the lens of their needs, and neither film pretends there are easy answers to their situations.

A 90-year-old Korean War vet agrees to smuggle drugs across the border, seduced by money and relevance. Clint Eastwood's film shares The Overnighters' moral ambiguity—watching a decent man's choices spiral due to desperation and poor judgment.

But Eastwood's politics are evident. The film's sympathy for its protagonist and indulgence of his behavior will anger viewers who can't forgive either.
