The Heroes of Telemark

A WWII sabotage thriller set in occupied Norway, where a resistance fighter and a reluctant physicist must infiltrate a German heavy water plant. Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris clash over strategy and conscience in this tense, well-mounted action film that balances intimate character drama with genuine espionage stakes. Gripping for anyone who loves intelligent war stories.

The Great Escape1963

The definitive POW escape film: meticulous planning, ensemble cast of excellent men, thrilling execution. If you loved the tactical puzzle of Telemark, this perfects that formula with added humour and heart.

But Over two hours long and deliberately paced. The final act pivots toward tragedy in a way that won't satisfy everyone who wants a clean victory.

The Guns of Navarone1961

A commando team infiltrates an enemy fortress to destroy something that can't be destroyed by conventional means. Same satisfying blend of clever planning, character conflict, and explosive payoff, with Gregory Peck carrying the moral weight.

But The dialogue can feel stiff and the women are entirely decorative. It's very much a men's adventure film, which limits its appeal.

Judgment at Nuremberg1961

Spencer Tracy as a judge wrestling with Nazi accountability. Extraordinarily moving examination of complicity and conscience. If Telemark's Rolf troubles you—that reluctant physicist caught between worlds—this explores that moral ground far deeper.

But It's a courtroom drama, so talk matters more than action. Three and a half hours of dialogue-heavy reckoning isn't for everyone.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Troll Hunter2010

Both films use Norway's remote geography and history of hidden resistance as their actual protagonist. The land itself is the third character.

A Norwegian found-footage film about secret government operations in remote Norwegian wilderness. Same landscape, same sense of ordinary people pulled into extraordinary danger, but filtered through dark comedy and modern paranoia. Ingenious genre-bending.

But It's shot like a YouTube video and plays much of its horror for laughs. If you want cinematic grandeur and period authenticity, this is deliberately, provocatively small.

The Eagle Has Landed1976

Sophisticated German commandos attempt a daring WWII raid. Michael Caine and Robert Duvall as opposing forces, with real tactical ingenuity and mutual professional respect between enemies. Deeply entertaining.

But By the 1970s, it's slicker and more cynical than Telemark. Some find that modern gloss undermines the period authenticity.

Where Eagles Dare1968

Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood scale a castle, shoot Nazis, and outsmart German intelligence. Pure, kinetic fun—a war film that knows exactly what it is and executes it with style and wit.

But It's essentially a heist film dressed as a war film. If you want moral complexity or historical substance, look elsewhere.

The Password Is Courage1962

Dirk Bogarde as a real British POW who escaped repeatedly. Lesser-known but beautifully crafted, with genuine warmth alongside the danger. A film about resourcefulness and humanity under pressure.

But Quieter and less well-remembered than its peers. It won't have the cultural resonance some expect from a WWII thriller.

The Odessa File1974

Jon Voight as a journalist hunting a Nazi war criminal. Espionage, intrigue, and a protagonist driven by principle rather than patriotism. Morally complex in ways Telemark only hints at.

But Sprawling and sometimes messy. The plot shifts focus and the ending may feel unsatisfying if you want neat resolution.

Is Paris Burning?1966

An enormous, star-studded account of the liberation of Paris. Sweeping in scope, with multiple narrative threads. If you want the grand historical canvas that Telemark's intimate story never attempts.

But The sprawl is part of the problem—it can feel unfocused and soap-operatic. An all-star cast sometimes means no one has time to matter.

Dirty Heroes1967

A scrappy Italian-German co-production about soldiers who'd rather live than fight. Rough charm, authentic period detail, and a willingness to undercut war-movie heroics with dark humour.

But The print is often poor, the dubbing variable, and the tone swings wildly. It feels like a film that came out of another tradition entirely, which it did.

Cold War2018

Both are about people trapped between occupying forces and their own desires, but Cold War asks what occupation costs the soul, where Telemark asks what it costs the mission.

A Polish film about impossible love during the Soviet occupation. Black-and-white, formally perfect, and absolutely heartbreaking. Takes the psychological and emotional toll that Telemark only glimpses and makes it the entire subject.

But It's a slow, grey, romantic tragedy with minimal plot. If you want action and clarity, you'll find only ambiguity and ache.

The Battle of Algiers1966

Both dramatise actual WWII/postwar operations, but Algiers never lets you forget the cost and complicity. Telemark entertains; Algiers interrogates.

A banned, then celebrated, documentary-realist masterpiece about urban insurgency and counter-insurgency. Shows resistance tactics with complete formal rigor and moral clarity. If you want to understand sabotage as political strategy, not just action-movie spectacle, this is essential.

But It's deliberately agitprop. The film doesn't hide its sympathies, and some will find that propagandistic. Also: it's in French and Italian with no glamorous stars.
