The Baby-Sitters Club

Other titles called The Baby-Sitters Club: the 2020 series (Netflix).

A 1995 adaptation of Ann M. Martin's beloved books about a group of junior-high friends running a babysitting business. It's earnest, cheerful, and pitched squarely at the pre-teen audience that grew up with the series. Nostalgic comfort viewing for those who remember the books, or a harmless Saturday-morning-cartoon-on-film energy for anyone else.

Clueless1995

Another '90s ensemble about teenage girls navigating friendship, fashion, and life—sharper and funnier, with the same affectionate tone and a killer soundtrack that defines the era.

But It's far more cynical and sex-focused than Baby-Sitters Club, and the satire might feel distant if you're looking for genuine sincerity.

Now and Then1995

Four childhood friends reunite as adults to solve a mystery from their past. Same nostalgia for pre-teen bonds, same wistful tone about growing up, and equally genuine about what friendship meant.

But Slower paced and more melancholic. The mystery plot feels secondary to the sadness of time passing.

The Baby-Sitters Club2020

Netflix's recent series adaptation of the same books. More polished, more diverse, and genuinely funny—it respects both the source material and its audience without talking down to either.

But If you loved the '95 film's specific aesthetic, the newer show's visual language is completely different. Some find it too earnest.

My So-Called Life1994

Both trust that pre-teen and teen girls' perspectives are worth centering. Both understand that friendship *is* the story, not a backdrop to other events.

A TV series that actually treats teenage girls' inner lives as serious and complex. The friendships matter as much as any plot. It's shot and written like a drama, not a sitcom, and takes its characters' feelings genuinely.

But Only one season and it ends on a cliffhanger that was never resolved. The pacing is slow and deliberately introspective—no plot-driven momentum at all.

Harriet the Spy1996

Pre-teen protagonist in a tight-knit friend group, learning hard lessons about loyalty and consequence. Same era, same audience, same fundamental belief that kids deserve smart stories.

But Darker and more morally complex. Less about camaraderie and more about the cost of betrayal.

Harriet the Spy poster

The Mighty Ducks1992

An underdog ensemble of kids finding confidence through teamwork. Earnest, funny, full of heart, and pitched at exactly the same audience with the same faith in them.

But Sports movie structure means less focus on character interaction and more on training montages. Broader comedy.

Matilda1996

Another Danny DeVito film that trusts its young audience. Magical but grounded, funny without being cynical, and genuinely moving about kids taking charge of their own lives.

But More fantasy and darker themes around parental neglect. The tone shifts more dramatically than Baby-Sitters Club maintains.

A League of Their Own1992

Women forming bonds through a shared endeavor, determined to make something work against the odds. Different era, different stakes, same DNA about female friendship and drive.

But Romantic subplots and adult themes. It's not pitched at kids and occasionally aims for bawdier comedy.

A League of Their Own poster

Steel Magnolias1989

An ensemble of women (across ages) supporting each other through life. Deep affection between characters, Southern warmth, and genuine laughter mixed with genuine feeling.

But Heavy emotional content and real tragedy. It's about surviving loss, not the cheerful camaraderie of kids solving problems together.

Beaches1988

Two women's lifelong friendship—how they sustain it, challenge it, and keep showing up for each other. Genuinely felt emotion and a willingness to be sincere about what bonds people.

But Melodramatic, occasionally overwrought, and centered on an adult woman's mortality. The tone can feel unintentionally funny if you're not in the right mood.

Fried Green Tomatoes1991

Both center female bonds as the emotional core and celebrate women organizing themselves outside male approval. Same values, completely different register.

Female friendship across decades, told through memory and connection. Funny, warm, angry, and ultimately about women choosing each other. It's the emotional architecture of what Baby-Sitters Club is doing, but for adult women.

But Southern Gothic undertones and serious themes of domestic abuse and female rage. Far more complex morally—the heroines aren't entirely admirable, and that's the point.

Shoplifters2018

Both are fundamentally about people choosing to form a unit and care for each other against the world. One is earnest wish-fulfillment for kids; the other is raw adult truth about needing to belong.

A chosen family of misfits working together to survive, finding genuine love and loyalty despite desperate circumstances. Beautifully shot, achingly human, and about what it means when people decide to protect each other.

But Japanese language film, slow-paced, deals with poverty and petty crime. Emotionally devastating—the opposite of feel-good. Subtitles required.
