The 13th Warrior
A 13th-century Arab diplomat gets swept into a Viking war band heading north to face an ancient evil. It's a swashbuckling odd-couple adventure that wears its contempt for historical accuracy lightly, built on Banderas and Kulich's chemistry and a genuine sense of camaraderie found in unlikely places. For people who want spectacle and fun over rigour.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy a sword-and-saga adventure where the pleasure is in travelling with a band of rough, funny outsiders and watching a cautious diplomat slowly earn his place among them.
Skip it if you want relentless pace; much of the runtime is spent on the road, around campfires and in conversation, and the battles arrive in bursts rather than as a steady drumbeat.
What it asks of you: Under two hours and built on a journey, so it rewards patience with the slow settling of the company before the trouble gathers and the fighting finally takes over.

The Last Kingdom2015
Gritty Saxon-versus-Viking saga with the same spirit of loyalty-across-enemies and warriors finding honour in battle. Spans seasons so you get to know these people, which deepens the stakes considerably.
But Moves slower and demands more patience than a two-hour film. Also genuinely brutal in ways that undercut the adventure-tale energy.

Conan the Barbarian1982
Schwarzenegger as a warrior recruited into a band to fight supernatural evil. Same DNA—mercenaries, mysticism, camaraderie forged in violence—executed with Milius's deadpan mythic tone and genuinely great action.
But Leaden pacing in the first hour while it sets mood. Some will find it ponderous where 13th Warrior zips along.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance2019
Vikings and Saxons collide with grubby authenticity, strong ensemble cast, and battles that feel consequential. The political intrigue balances perfectly against the warfare and weird supernatural elements.
But Slower burn than you'd expect. Also very grim—there's less camaraderie and more betrayal than you get in 13th Warrior.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Northman2022
Both deploy Vikings as warriors finding brotherhood in impossible circumstances, but where 13th Warrior is a romp, The Northman is a doomed saga. Same machinery, opposite emotional register.
Eggers's Viking revenge epic with Skarsgård, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Willem Dafoe. Operatic, mythologically obsessed, gorgeously shot—treats Norse culture with the reverence 13th Warrior plays fast and loose with. Proper tragedy.
But Deliberately punishing and bleak. No winking, no fun. If you liked 13th Warrior's adventure tone, this will feel like a very different (and heavier) experience.

Valhalla Rising2010
A warrior joins Crusaders heading toward Jerusalem, bound by blood and circumstance. Gorgeous, meditative, philosophical. If you loved the mysterious north-heading journey aspect of 13th Warrior.
But Lysergic and cryptic. Some see it as a masterpiece; others find it glacially slow and baffling. Not a fun adventure.

Pathfinder1987
Norwegian Vikings versus invaders in the frozen north, built on lean action and genuine peril. Low-budget ingenuity makes it feel scrappier and more real than big-budget spectacle.
But Dialogue is sparse and acting is not Hollywood-smooth. Feels more like a folk tale than a popcorn film.

Beowulf & Grendel2005
Gerard Butler's Beowulf joins forces with a warrior woman to face a misunderstood monster in the North. Reimagines the legend with genuine moral complexity and mutual respect across enemies.
But Deliberately revisionist, which some find clever and others find sacrilegious. Also a bit ponderous for what could be a romp.

The Viking1928
Silent-era adventure about a Viking captain. If you want to see where 13th Warrior's DNA comes from—pure action, spectacle, and physicality before dialogue took over.
But It's silent and 95 years old. Intertitles and jerky frame rates will feel alien unless you actively love silent cinema.

Outlander2014
A woman trapped in 18th-century Scotland falls in with Highland warriors. Blends adventure, loyalty, and odd-couple bonding (across time, across culture) with genuine affection for its ensemble cast.
But Heavy romance subplot that dominates later seasons. If you want pure warrior camaraderie, it gets buried under relationship drama.

The Norseman1978
Same basic plot engine (warrior+ quest north + family reunited through combat), but stripped of all gloss. Where 13th Warrior is Hollywood spectacle, The Norseman is what a Viking adventure looks like when nobody's watching the budget.
A Viking warrior arrives in 11th-century America to find his kidnapped son. Bargain-basement 1970s exploitation adventure with genuine oddness—Lee Majors as a Viking, shot in Minnesota, utterly unpolished. The anti-13th Warrior: all charm because it has no budget to hide behind.
But Technically incompetent in ways that will frustrate you if you want slick filmmaking. The acting is broad and the logic is wonky. It's camp, and that's the point—some people hate camp.
