Taramani
Taramani is a Tamil-language romance that dares to let its conflict live inside the characters rather than resolve it neatly. A conventional man and a fiercely independent woman collide, and the film watches them reckon with incompatibility that love alone cannot fix. It's tender, modern, and unafraid of ambiguity.

962018
A Tamil romance that likewise privileges emotional honesty over conventional narrative satisfaction. Two former classmates reconnect and must confront how they've changed, with the same willingness to let bittersweet feelings coexist.
But Moves slowly and deliberately. If you need clear resolution or traditional romantic triumph, this will frustrate you.

Arjun Reddy2017
Another South Indian film about a headstrong protagonist learning that intensity and passion aren't enough to sustain a relationship. Raw, modern, and genuinely interested in the damage people cause each other.
But Contains graphic content and explores toxicity unflinchingly. The protagonist is deliberately unlikeable for much of the runtime.

The Farewell2019
A film about cultural dislocation and the gap between how we're raised and how we choose to live. Like Taramani, it finds the quiet tragedy in family and identity.
But Deliberately paced. The conflict is internal and cultural rather than plot-driven, which some viewers find slow.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Fire Within1963
Both films refuse the fantasy that love conquers all, instead examining how two people can care deeply and still be fundamentally misaligned.
Louis Malle's film about a man moving through the world after attempting suicide, reconnecting with people from his past. Like Taramani, it's concerned with incompatibility and the way love cannot always save us. Both films trust you to sit with sadness without resolution.
But A 1963 French film about suicidal ideation. Deliberately bleak and offers no comfort. Requires patience with ambiguity and existential despair.

Before Sunrise1995
Two people with fundamentally different worldviews spend one night together. The entire film is conversation about connection, compatibility, and whether love can overcome difference. Remarkably close in spirit.
But Ninety minutes of dialogue. If you need action or conventional story momentum, you'll be bored.

Margarita with a Straw2015
An Indian film about a young woman with cerebral palsy discovering love and sexuality on her own terms. Like Taramani, it insists on female interiority and complexity.
But Contains sexual content that some viewers may find uncomfortable or that pushes against their expectations of how disability is portrayed.

Lucia2013
A Kannada film about a woman whose dreams and reality blur dangerously. Experimental in form and genuinely interested in female psychology in ways mainstream cinema avoids.
But Surreal and deliberately disorienting. The narrative structure is challenging and won't clarify itself for you.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil2016
A Bollywood film that attempts something closer to Taramani's complexity: a romance structured around unresolved longing and the messiness of real attraction.
But Bollywood formula still shows through. The film wants to have mainstream appeal, which dilutes some of its sharper edges.

In the Mood for Love2000
Both films find romance in impossibility and unspoken feeling. Both understand that desire and reality pull in different directions.
Wong Kar-wai's masterpiece about two neighbours discovering their spouses are having an affair. Visually intoxicating, built entirely from restraint and longing. It shares Taramani's understanding that love and compatibility are not the same thing.
But Visual style is extremely mannered. Scenes repeat. The emotional action is almost entirely sublimated into colour and composition, which can feel airless.

Summer 19932017
Both films centre on the gap between what we want from someone and what they're able to give. Neither punishes anyone for it; both accept it as human fact.
A Catalan film about a nine-year-old girl spending the summer with her grandmother after her mother abandons her. It's about incompleteness, silence, and learning that people you love cannot always give you what you need—a scaled-down parallel to Taramani's central insight.
But Almost entirely nonverbal. A child's film, but not a cheerful one. Deals with parental abandonment and emotional deprivation with no explanation offered.
