Sing 2
- Animated musical
- Light-hearted
Sing 2 is a joyful animated musical about misfits chasing a dream on a bigger stage. Matthew McConaughey's eternally optimistic koala leads a ragtag crew of singing animals trying to put on a show in a glamorous city, complete with a reluctant rock legend and showbiz scheming. It's energetic, heartfelt, and genuinely funny—less cynical than most family fare, more earnest about why these characters matter to each other.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you get a kick out of a bright, loud jukebox musical where the songs do the storytelling and a cast of cheerful misfits keeps tumbling into trouble.
Skip it if your patience for sugary, relentless cheer runs thin, since the film rarely lets its sweetness stop for quiet moments and the jokes come at a constant clip.
What it asks of you: Expect a fairly brisk 110 minutes with a lot of colour and noise, and not much asked of you beyond sitting back and tapping along to the songs.

If you liked this
Sing2016
The original film that started it all, with the same warmth and infectious energy. If you enjoyed the sequel's heart and humor, the first movie deepens your investment in Buster and the crew's initial, underdog journey.
But It covers familiar beats—the struggling theater, the big audition, the personal breakthroughs—so you might find it repetitive if you've just finished the sequel.

Zootopia2016
Another animated ensemble where animals from different walks of life find common ground. It's clever, gorgeously designed, and balances comedy for kids with layers of meaning that adults will catch—similar DNA to Sing 2's warmth.
But It's more interested in satire and social commentary than pure musical joy, so the tone is cooler and less exuberant than what you might be craving.

Coco2017
A dazzling musical about family, legacy, and performance that hits even harder emotionally than Sing 2. Pixar at its best: gorgeous animation, killer songs, and characters you genuinely care about by the end.
But It's much more serious about grief and memory. If you're looking for something as light and buoyant as Sing 2, this will surprise you with its weight.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Sing Street2016
Both are love letters to music as a form of hope and connection; both show how performance can heal and unite people who feel like outsiders.
A live-action film about Dublin teenagers forming a band to impress a girl. It has Sing 2's belief in the transformative power of music and performance, but filtered through the rough-edged reality of adolescence and economic struggle. The songs are genuinely moving because the stakes matter.
But It's set in 1980s Dublin and plays as an indie dramedy rather than an animated comedy. If you want animals and broad humor, the human vulnerability here might feel like a different genre entirely.

The Greatest Showman2017
A live-action musical about a showman with big dreams and a troupe of misfits he believes in. Hugh Jackman brings Buster Moon energy to the role, and the songs are anthemic in the way Sing 2's best moments are.
But It's more saccharine and less funny, and the movie doesn't always earn its earnestness. Some find it manipulative where Sing 2 feels genuinely sweet.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted2012
A colorful, bonkers adventure where animal misfits end up running a circus. It's got the same irreverent humor, physical comedy, and celebration of unlikely friendships that makes Sing 2 so fun.
But It's louder and more chaotic, with jokes that sometimes miss. The plot is thinner than Sing 2, and it relies heavily on celebrity voice cameos rather than character depth.

Raya and the Last Dragon2021
An animated adventure with humor, heart, and spectacular action sequences. It takes its world seriously while staying genuinely fun, and the central relationship between the two leads has real weight to it.
But There's no music-driven narrative like Sing 2, and it's oriented toward a slightly older audience. If you want the warmth without the songs, this nails it.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part2019
An exuberant, fast-paced comedy with genuine heart underneath the chaos. Like Sing 2, it's crafted for families but has enough clever jokes and emotional sincerity to work for everyone.
But The relentless pace and rapid-fire jokes can exhaust rather than delight. Some find it too knowing and self-referential for a family film.

Encanto2021
A vibrant musical about a family where everyone has magical gifts except the heroine. The songs are catchy, the voice acting is warm, and it explores belonging and family in ways that echo Sing 2's emotional core.
But It's darker than Sing 2—there's real family dysfunction beneath the color and music. The pacing sags in the middle, and some songs overstay their welcome.

Moana2016
A gorgeously animated musical with an adventurous spirit and a protagonist who believes in herself even when no one else does. It's got Buster Moon's infectious optimism in Moana's DNA.
But It's slower-paced and more introspective than Sing 2. If you're looking for the same rapid-fire ensemble comedy, you'll find this more contemplative.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend2015
Both use comedy and music to explore what it means to want something badly and to find your people. Both celebrate performers who aren't conventionally talented but have unshakeable faith in the work.
A musical comedy series where a woman reinvents her life through elaborate, surprising song numbers. It's genuinely hilarious and unexpectedly intelligent, with characters you grow to love across four seasons. The songs span every genre imaginable.
But It's a 38-episode commitment, and the first season takes time to find its footing. The humor is more adult and awkward than Sing 2, and the main character makes terrible decisions repeatedly.

Ratatouille2007
Both are about belief in something beautiful despite having no credentials or obvious right to pursue it. Both show what happens when someone with genuine passion meets someone with the means to help.
Pixar's masterpiece about an unlikely hero (a rat) who wants to be a chef in Paris. It shares Sing 2's core DNA: an underdog with a dream, mentorship, beautiful animation, and genuine laugh-out-loud humor paired with real emotional payoff.
But It came out in 2007, so you may have already seen it. If you haven't, there's no good reason to wait—but nothing about it screams 'for fans of Sing 2' on the surface.
