Ramona and Beezus

Ramona and Beezus adapts Beverly Cleary's beloved books with warm affection, following a spirited younger sister and her exasperated older sibling through the small collisions of family life. It's gentle, funny, and pitched squarely at kids without pandering to adults. You'll watch it because someone you love is eight, or because you remember being eight, or because sometimes you just want something kind.

Harriet the Spy1996

A child detective navigates growing up and friendship with similar heart and humor. Rosie O'Donnell's warmth as the adult guardian echoes the film's whole philosophy: kids are people, too.

But The pacing is distinctly '90s, which means it dawdles where modern kids' films zoom. Some scenes feel slack.

Matilda1996

Another story of a imaginative kid making chaos look like kindness, with Danny DeVito's framing giving it real emotional weight. The fantasy elements are more pronounced, but the sister-like devotion is identical.

But It gets darker and more mythic than Ramona; if you want lighter tone throughout, this goes places the book adaptation won't.

The Parent Trap1998

Sibling love as the engine of the whole story—two kids working together to fix their family. Nancy Meyers' direction finds genuine warmth beneath the comedy, and the performances feel lived-in.

But It's fundamentally a romantic comedy; the kids are solving their parents' relationship, which isn't everyone's draw.

My Girl1991

Both center a girl everyone finds difficult, and both argue that being difficult is often just being alive intensely. Both ask: what happens if we take children's emotional lives seriously instead of cute-ifying them? Both say: they deserve better, and so do you.

Vada Sultenfuss is Ramona's spiritual cousin—imaginative, tactless, making elaborate stories about her world. But this film lets childhood hurt as well as amuse. It's funny and genuinely moving without ever pandering. Dan Aykroyd is perfect as her father.

But It ends in real grief. Some versions of this tone-clash don't work; this one does, but you need to be prepared for it to earn its emotions rather than earn its laughs.

Cheaper by the Dozen2003

Ensemble family comedy with a similar philosophy: chaos is love, mess is honest, and everyone gets their moment. Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt actually seem to like each other, which matters.

But With twelve kids instead of two, no one gets deep character arcs. It's surface-level warmth.

Because of Winn-Dixie2005

A lonely kid and a dog find family and community in a small town. Jeff Daniels is a wonderful single father. The emotional spine is real, and the humor comes from observation rather than hitting notes.

But It's slower and more melancholy than Ramona. If you're watching for laughs, this will feel like it's working hard for its sweet moments.

Charlotte's Web2006

Another Eliza Wood as a child discovering the world's complexity and kindness. The film honors the book's quiet moments and never talks down. Terryl Hardin's pig is genuinely funny.

But It's fundamentally about mortality and loss. The emotional finish is earned but heavy in a way Ramona never attempts.

Hotel Transylvania2012

Similar timeframe, similar audience, similar warmth. Adam Sandler's exasperated parent voice and the film's screwball energy make it a good double feature if you want to stay in this headspace.

But It's animated, which changes the rhythm and texture entirely. If you're in the mood for live-action specificity, animation might feel like a dodge.

Nim's Island2008

Abigail Breslin as a resourceful kid in her own adventure, with Jodie Foster as her imaginary ideal. It's adventure-coded but sincere about what imagination does for lonely children.

But The adventure plot takes over from character, and it becomes less intimate and more plot-procedural than Ramona allows.
