But It's black-and-white, unhurried, and ends on a note far more melancholy than anything you'd expect from a modern rom-com.

Real strangers are thrown into a compressed window where the normal rules of dating are suspended and coupling up is basically the whole point — the same premise, stripped of the joke and the script, and a lot trashier for it.

It's the unscripted, shameless cousin of the premise: real people thrown into a rule-bound window built for hookups and romance, with all the mess and cruelty a script would smooth away.

But There's no romantic-comedy craft here at all — it's messy, cynical reality TV, and it can feel bleak rather than sweet.
