Film
Noelle
- Fairy tale
- Light-hearted
A cheerful Christmas comedy where Santa's daughter leaves the North Pole to rescue her brother from a crisis of conscience about inheriting the family business. It's a sweet, lightly magical film that leans on charm and earnestness rather than cynicism—the kind of thing that plays well on a December evening with cocoa nearby. Made for people who don't need their holiday movies to be ironic.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy a warm, gently silly Christmas fantasy where the jokes land on family squabbling and the North Pole's bureaucracy, and you don't mind a holiday film that wears its heart on its sleeve.
Skip it if you want a sharp, surprising take on the Santa legend, since this one follows a familiar, cosy路 road and leans on sentiment more than invention.
What it asks of you: About a hundred minutes of easy, unhurried viewing with no real darkness, so it suits a lazy festive evening rather than close attention.

Elf2003
A fish-out-of-water comedy about someone raised in an impossible place trying to navigate the real world, with genuine warmth underneath the comedy and a lead performance of total commitment to the bit.
But It's been seen a lot, and some of the comedy hasn't aged perfectly. The earnestness can feel cloying if you're in the wrong mood.

A Christmas Story1983
A genuinely funny, endlessly rewatchable Christmas film that finds humour in real family dynamics without ever turning mean. It's as much about how families actually behave as it is about Christmas itself.
But The pacing is deliberate rather than snappy, and it's built on a very specific Midwestern nostalgia that won't resonate with everyone.

The Santa Clause1994
A clever premise—a divorced dad accidentally becomes Santa and must navigate the job while reconnecting with his son—executed with genuine heart and practical magic that still looks good.
But The second and third films exist and are significantly worse, so you might end up bitter about the franchise. It's also aimed at kids, which some adults find limiting.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Lion in Winter1968
Noelle is about a family obligation threatening to collapse. This is about family bonds being tested to breaking. Both ask: what do you owe the family you're born into?
A family gathered at Christmas where every member has a secret agenda and loyalty is up for grabs. Katharine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole spar brilliantly. It's sophisticated, funny, and genuinely wise about what families actually are.
But It's a heavy drama full of betrayal, not a light confection. No one is good. It's also a period film that requires attention, not background watching.

Klaus2019
A stunning animated film about the origin of Santa that takes itself seriously in the best way, with gorgeous hand-drawn animation and a story about kindness and loneliness that actually earns its emotion.
But It's not comic relief—it's a real story about real feelings, which makes it slower and heavier than traditional holiday fare. Some find it too sincere.

Mixed Nuts1994
An anarchic Christmas comedy with an ensemble cast (Steve Martin, Rita Wilson, Rob Reiner) riffing off each other on New Year's Eve. It's chaotic and silly in a way that respects the audience's intelligence.
But The humour is deeply 1990s and the plot is deliberately scattered. If you want coherence, this will frustrate you. It's also quite dark for a holiday film.

Last Christmas2019
A romantic comedy set at a Christmas market with genuine chemistry between leads and enough plot twists to keep you engaged past what seems like the obvious ending.
But The final twist divides viewers sharply—some find it moving, others find it manipulative. The first half is also considerably better than the second.

A Christmas Carol2009
Robert Zemeckis's motion-capture version takes Dickens seriously as a story about genuine transformation and regret, with visual invention throughout and Jim Carrey doing excellent work as Scrooge.
But Motion capture can feel uncanny and off-putting. The film also takes the darkness of the source material seriously, so it's not cosy.

Happiest Season2020
A recent Christmas rom-com with a queer couple at its centre, genuine stakes about identity and family, and actors who clearly enjoy each other's company. It's funny and sweet without being saccharine.
But The third act leans into contrivance and some plot points feel unearned. The politics of the ending will bother anyone paying close attention.

Trading Places1983
A brilliantly constructed comedy about class and privilege that happens to be set partly at Christmas. Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd are perfectly paired, and it's endlessly clever.
But It's not really a Christmas film—it just uses Christmas as backdrop—so it might not hit the seasonal notes you're after. Some humour hasn't aged well.

Arthur Christmas2011
Both centre on a sibling relationship where one doubts their place in the family business and the other must help them find it. Both are about being valued for who you are, not what you can do.
An animated film where Santa's organisation is revealed as a high-tech military operation and a nervous, anxious son must prove himself against his brother. It's visually inventive, genuinely funny, and surprisingly moving about anxiety and self-doubt.
But It's overstuffed with plot and technology, which some find busy and exhausting. The animation style, while distinctive, isn't for everyone.
