Newlyweds
Other titles called Newlyweds: the 2026 series (NBC).
A newlywed couple's honeymoon derails when both their sisters show up uninvited. It's a small, character-driven comedy that finds humour and tenderness in the friction between romance and family obligation. Warmly observed, low-stakes, and genuinely funny about how people we love can accidentally wreck our best-laid plans.

Rachel Getting Married2008
Like Newlyweds, it uses a major life event as scaffolding for messy family dynamics. Anchored by brilliant ensemble work and a willingness to let moments breathe, it finds real comedy and heartbreak in how families collide.
But It's considerably darker and more fractious than Newlyweds, with an edge of genuine dysfunction that won't appeal if you want something purely light.

The Overnight2015
A couple-centred comedy about desire, marriage, and the weird rituals we perform with other adults. Sharp writing, strong chemistry between leads, and a willingness to be awkward in surprising ways.
But It gets sexually explicit in ways Newlyweds doesn't approach. If you prefer your comedies chaste or less incisive about desire, this will push past your comfort zone.

Mistress America2015
Greta Gerwig's film about a young woman and her newfound stepsister-to-be captures the comedy and sting of intrusion into someone else's life. Charming, digressive, genuinely witty about relationships and belonging.
But It's quirky in a very deliberate way, and some find Gerwig's timing and sensibility mannered. If indie comedy aesthetics feel precious to you, this won't convert you.

Something you would not have found on your own.
A Separation2011
Both examine marriage through intrusion and crisis, but Asghar Farhadi shows what happens when the rupture is permanent. It's the dark mirror Newlyweds could become if circumstances were harsher.
Made the same year as Newlyweds but in Iran, it uses family rupture to explore how two people can love each other and still hurt each other irreparably. Formally brilliant, emotionally devastating, and asks hard questions about marriage and obligation.
But It's a serious drama about moral ambiguity with no easy answers. Expecting comedy or comfort will leave you blindsided and angry.

The In-Laws1979
A pure farce about family obligation and two men dragged into chaos together. Wonderfully paced, genuinely hilarious, and understands that comedy lives in how people respond when their plans fall apart.
But It's very much a 1970s production, and the farce machinery can feel dated if you're looking for something that feels contemporary in its humour.

Four Rooms1995
Similar ensemble-in-one-location structure, with multiple couples and their various crises colliding over one night. Loose, weird, and committed to the bit in ways that shouldn't work but often do.
But It's genuinely uneven—some sketches land brilliantly, others thud. The whole thing has a student project energy that won't suit everyone.

Love, Rosie2014
A film about long friendship disrupted by life events and poor timing. Warm, funny, and genuinely interested in how people hurt each other without meaning to, and how they repair it.
But It swings between romantic comedy and relationship drama in ways that can feel tonally uncertain. Some sequences veer into treacle.

Celeste & Jesse Forever2012
A smart, funny film about a marriage ending, anchored by two people who clearly love each other and the terrible comedy that creates. Honest about desire and connection in ways most comedies avoid.
But It's more melancholy than Newlyweds by design, and the indie sensibility and in-jokes won't appeal to everyone's taste.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall2008
A vacation comedy where everyone's plans fall apart and it becomes about learning to be around people you'd rather avoid. Genuinely funny, sweet without being sappy, and full of character work.
But It leans harder into broader comedy and male humiliation than Newlyweds does. If you find that register exhausting, this will fatigue you.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World2012
Two people stuck together because of circumstance, finding something real in proximity and forced conversation. Tender, funny in small ways, and interested in how ordinary people behave when normal rules don't apply.
But The apocalypse premise becomes heavy, and it pivots toward melancholy. Expecting lightness throughout will disappoint you.

Moonlight2016
Like Newlyweds, it's fascinated by how people relate when vulnerability is required. But where Newlyweds finds comedy in that friction, Moonlight finds poetry and grief.
Three chapters of a man's life, exploring intimacy, desire, family, and the spaces between who we are with different people. Shot with extraordinary tenderness and formal beauty, it accumulates emotional power without melodrama.
But It's elliptical and spare in dialogue. If you need plot momentum and explanation, it will feel like watching someone else's memory rather than a story.

She Dies Tomorrow2020
Both films are about people arriving in someone else's carefully planned life. But Newlyweds finds it sweet and manageable; She Dies Tomorrow finds it terrifying and absurd.
Amy Seimetz's weird, hypnotic film about a woman convinced she's dying, and the people around her who can't quite help. Strange, darkly funny, visually striking, and genuinely about how we fail to reach each other across difference.
But It's genuinely experimental—the structure is repetitive by design, the logic is dreamlike. If you need conventional narrative and clear meaning, it will frustrate you.
