Mujhse Dosti Karoge!
- Romantic comedy
- Light-hearted
A romantic comedy about a man caught between two women—his childhood sweetheart and a devoted friend who's harbored secret feelings for him. It's a warm, playful Bollywood confection from 2002, built on genuine chemistry and the particular charm of early-2000s Hindi cinema. Designed for anyone who loves a love triangle where everyone stays likable and the humor lands gently.

Dil Chahta Hai2001
The spiritual predecessor to this kind of smart, funny Bollywood romance. Three friends navigate desire, loyalty, and what love actually means. Sharper script, more sophisticated emotional texture, but cut from the same warm cloth.
But Shot in glamorous European locations that can feel distant. If you want something set in recognizable reality, this prioritizes romance-film aesthetics over it.

Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na2008
Two best friends in denial about being in love. Same DNA as Mujhse Dosti but with even more effervescent charm—Imran Khan and Genelia have absolutely electric rapport, and it's genuinely funny without trying too hard.
But The second half gets melodramatic in ways that undercut the first half's lightness. Some viewers find the tonal shift jarring.

Kal Ho Naa Ho2003
A terminally ill man decides to play matchmaker between his best friend and a woman he loves. It has Mujhse Dosti's heart—that peculiar Bollywood magic where romance and friendship feel equally weighted—plus real emotional depth.
But It's a grief film wearing a love-story costume. Heavier than you might expect. Some find the shift into sentimentality manipulative.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
When Harry Met Sally...1989
Both films make the same central argument: that the question of who you end up with matters less than understanding what you actually feel. Each structures an entire narrative around the architecture of two simultaneous loves and what each one means.
The Western answer to every Hindi romantic question about friendship and love. Before Bollywood owned this territory, Nora Ephron made the definitive film about whether opposite-sex friendship can survive desire. Brilliantly written, funny, genuinely moving—and it influenced everything.
But Made in 1989, it moves at a gentler pace than modern film. The New York setting and indie-film sensibility is miles from Mujhse Dosti's glossy maximalism.

Hera Pheri2000
Absurdist comedy about three friends trying to solve a mystery for money. Not a romance, but captures that early-2000s Bollywood magic of watching charismatic people riff and improvise together. Silly and irresistible.
But The plot is barely coherent and exists mainly as scaffolding for jokes. If you need narrative coherence, this will frustrate you.

Bunty Aur Babli2005
A con-artist couple outwitting the law while falling deeper in love. Vibrant, playful, endlessly watchable—it has that same lightweight confidence that makes Mujhse Dosti so rewatchable. Abhishek and Aishwarya are perfect together.
But The heist plots are silly enough to distract from the relationship beats if you're looking for stakes. Crime here is treated as a game, not a moral question.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai1998
Friends, lost love, unrequited feelings, a reunion. It's the template that Mujhse Dosti works within. Aged beautifully—the sincerity is disarming and the film knows exactly what it is, without irony or apology.
But Comes from a decade earlier, so the pacing feels slower. Some find Karan Johar's sentimentality excessive, even for Bollywood.

Om Shanti Om2007
A reincarnation romance with real heart underneath the spectacle. Shah Rukh and Deepika have genuine warmth, and it proves Bollywood could do glossy, big-budget romance without losing emotional authenticity.
But The reincarnation gimmick wears thin. Some find the revenge subplot distracts from what makes it work—the central relationship.

Aa ab Laut Chalen1999
An underrated gem about an Indian professor and his unexpected romance. Gentle, thoughtful, and genuinely romantic without being saccharine. Features real emotional conversation between adults.
But Slower and more melancholic than Mujhse Dosti. If you want lightness and humor, this will feel contemplative by comparison.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind2004
Both films understand that loving two people isn't simple, but for different reasons. One celebrates the confusion as healthy; the other mourns what confusion costs. They're moral inverses about the same emotional reality.
A heartbroken man tries to erase memories of his ex, only to fall in love with her all over again. It's visually stunning, existentially reckless, and genuinely moving about how the same person can be both exactly right and completely wrong.
But Science-fiction framing, deliberate incoherence in the narrative structure, and real melancholy. Nothing like a Bollywood romance in register or tone—it's art-house and doesn't apologize for it.

Pride & Prejudice2005
Like Mujhse Dosti, it's built on the gap between what people say they want and what they actually want. Both films trust that gap—that space between certainty and surprise—is where real romantic feeling lives.
Elizabeth and Darcy spent the film thinking they understand what they want. When attraction conflicts with judgment, Austen asks: How do you know? It's exquisitely romantic because it's exquisitely uncertain—and the script lets the feeling breathe in silences.
But Prestige British period drama with a glacial pace. If you want immediate gratification and bright colors, this will feel like homework. Also assumes you either know or care about Austen's text.
