Mahanati
Mahanati is a sweeping biographical drama about Savitri, Telugu cinema's first female superstar. It's a portrait of stardom, ambition, and the cost of fame, told with visual grandeur and emotional depth. If you love stories about artists fighting for dignity in systems designed to exploit them, this is essential viewing.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love biopics that build a life from the inside, watching a performer's public glamour sit beside private cost, and you don't mind the film juggling two timelines to do it.
Skip it if you want a brisk night out, since this runs close to three hours and lingers over scenes that sometimes feel repeated rather than pushing forward.
What it asks of you: Nearly three hours of patient, unhurried storytelling, with interview scenes in the present stitched between flashbacks, so you'll need to stay with it rather than skim.

Rang De Basanti2006
A charismatic ensemble drama about idealism colliding with reality in modern India. Like Mahanati, it captures the intensity of people who believe they can change things, and shows what happens when the world pushes back.
But The tone shifts between comedy and seriousness in ways that can feel jarring. Some find the messaging heavy-handed.

Natrang2010
A Marathi film about a classical theater actor's obsessive quest for artistic perfection. It shares Mahanati's fascination with the machinery of performance and the performer's impossible search for respect within it.
But It's deliberately abrasive and the lead character is difficult to root for. The pacing is slow, and there's no reassuring narrative arc.

Piku2015
A intimate character study that looks past celebrity to find the person underneath. It has the same observational warmth as Mahanati and genuine affection for its flawed subjects.
But It's very small and domestic compared to Mahanati's epic sweep. If you want spectacle, you'll feel a little let down.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Red Shoes1948
Both explore the incompatibility between love and artistic ambition, and both suggest that for women, the system forces an impossible choice.
A British Technicolor masterpiece about a dancer caught between love and the merciless demands of art. It's the spiritual ancestor of every film about women artists torn between the personal and the professional—Mahanati walks the same moral ground as this film, just 70 years later in a different industry.
But It's theatrical and stylized in ways that can feel artificial to modern eyes. The resolution is tragic and offers no comfort, which some find punitive rather than truthful.

Kaavalan2011
Dulquer Salmaan's first Malayalam film is a richly romantic period piece. If you fell for his work in Mahanati, this shows a different register entirely: earnest, handsome, deeply felt.
But It's uncynical about love and tradition in ways that can read as saccharine. The film is long and deliberately paced.

Raees2017
A biographical crime drama about ambition and the men who exploit systems. It has similar themes of compromise and the corruption of idealism under pressure.
But It's more plot-driven than character-driven. The film tries to be both a thriller and a biography and sometimes shortchanges both.

Drishyam2013
A Malayalam masterclass in moral complexity. A man protects his family by breaking the law, and the film asks uncomfortable questions about loyalty versus justice, just as Mahanati questions the cost of loyalty to art.
But It's a tightly wound thriller, not a life story. If you come to it expecting scope and romance, you'll feel the constraint.

Begum Jaan2017
Set during Partition, it follows the women of a brothel navigating displacement and power. It shares Mahanati's interest in female agency, history, and the body as a contested site of value.
But The film is uneven tonally and sometimes slips into melodrama. Historical weight and cinema history don't always sit comfortably together in the execution.

Chandralekha1998
A rare 1990s biography of a classical dancer that predates Mahanati's approach. It offers historical context for how Indian cinema has portrayed female artists and their struggles.
But It's dated in its filmmaking language and doesn't have Mahanati's visual polish. The pacing reflects different era sensibilities entirely.

Yi Yi2000
Both use historical or generational span to suggest how individual lives are shaped by forces larger than the self, and both trust the audience to find meaning in observation rather than explanation.
Edward Yang's epic Taiwanese domestic drama observes three generations navigating family, marriage, and mortality over 173 minutes. Like Mahanati, it has the unhurried confidence to let scenes breathe and refuses melodrama, finding profound humanity in small moments and difficult choices.
But It's patient to the point of stillness and makes no concessions to plot. If you need momentum and catharsis, this will frustrate you deeply.
