Flicka
A 16-year-old girl determined to run her family's Wyoming horse ranch captures and trains a wild mustang to prove herself to her skeptical father. It's a straightforward coming-of-age story about independence, family bonds, and the healing power of animal companionship. Sincere rather than cynical, aimed at young viewers who love horses and stories about earning respect.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love a horse story built on a stubborn teenager, mountain country, and the slow work of earning trust between a wild animal and its rider.
Skip it if you want horse films with sharp edges or quick pace; this one is earnest, sentimental and gentle, with its family drama moving at an unhurried clip.
What it asks of you: Ninety-five minutes of unhurried pacing, with long stretches of training and open landscape, so settle in rather than expect quick turns.

The Black Stallion1979
A boy and a wild Arabian stallion form a transformative bond on a desert island, then compete together. It has that same magic of a young person and an untamed horse becoming partners, with stunning cinematography and genuine stakes.
But The pacing is deliberate and it takes time to get to the racing sequences. Some viewers find the middle section slow.

My Friend Flicka1943
A boy raises a filly and battles his father's doubt about his abilities. It's the spiritual ancestor of this film—same themes, same Wyoming landscape, same emotional architecture, but with older Hollywood polish and deeper family complexity.
But It's in black and white and moves at a 1940s pace. The gender dynamics will feel dated, which is partly why watching it before Flicka is instructive.

Seabiscuit2003
A damaged horse and broken people heal each other during the Depression. Beautifully made, with genuine emotional depth about underdogs and second chances. The horse-as-salvation theme runs deep.
But It's over two hours and the parallel storylines dilute focus. Some find it overstuffed despite its strengths.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Fried Green Tomatoes1991
Both explore what it costs for a capable person to claim space in a world that doesn't want them there.
Two women find freedom and strength through an unlikely friendship, one discovering she can be capable and independent in ways her world never allowed. Flicka is about a girl proving she can do a man's job; this is the same fight, but for adult women finding their power too late, making it rawer and more consequential.
But It's set in the South and centered on female friendship rather than family or horses. The tone is darker and sometimes uncomfortable about the forces working against women.

National Velvet1945
A young girl secretly trains a horse for the Grand National. The ancestral text for 'girl and horse' stories. Elizabeth Taylor is luminous, and there's real tension about whether she can pull it off.
But The ending feels compressed after all that buildup. It's also very much a product of its era in how it handles gender and class.

Hidalgo2004
An American cowboy rides an Arabian horse across the desert in an epic race. Spectacular action sequences, gorgeous landscapes, and a human-animal partnership that actually feels earned. Unashamed adventure.
But The plot is thin and the character development minimal. It's essentially a two-hour horse race with pretty cinematography.

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron2002
An animated wild mustang refuses to be broken by a cavalry officer. The animation is beautiful, the mustang's independence is the entire point, and it respects the animal's autonomy in ways live-action often doesn't.
But It's animated, which some viewers dismiss out of hand. The plot is straightforward to the point of simplicity.

Anne of Green Gables1985
A determined girl arriving at a new place determines to belong and prove herself. Different setting, same emotional DNA—a young person fighting to be seen as capable. The 1985 miniseries is beautifully done.
But It's period drama about a girl in Canada, not a horse story at all. If you're specifically wanting animal companionship, this won't deliver it.

The Horse Whisperer1998
A woman brings a traumatized horse to a man who can heal it, and both horse and woman undergo transformation. Slower and more introspective than Flicka, with real craftsmanship in how it portrays the healing process.
But It's a romantic drama masquerading as a horse film. The love story dominates, and if you want the focus on the animal, you'll be disappointed.

Winter's Bone2010
Both follow a determined young woman in a rural landscape proving she can handle adult responsibilities, but where Flicka finds triumph, this finds survival.
A 16-year-old girl in rural Missouri must find her missing father or lose her family home. Like Flicka, it's about a teenager proving her competence to survive in an unforgiving place. But it's unsparing about poverty and danger in ways Flicka never touches. Jennifer Lawrence's performance is extraordinary.
But It's bleak. There's no magical horse salvation here—just a girl enduring and strategizing through real danger and real loss. Flicka is hopeful; this is not.
