Film
Fidaa
A Telugu romance that finds humour and heart in the collision between two people from different worlds. Sai Pallavi and Varun Tej have genuine chemistry as they navigate misunderstandings, family pressure, and their own stubborn certainties about love. It's warm, funny, and unpretentious—the kind of film that knows exactly what it is and does it well.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like romances built on slow, observant detail and awkward, funny banter, where the central pull is two people getting to know each other rather than grand gestures.
Skip it if you want a brisk, plot-driven love story; at 145 minutes it lingers on small moments, and its long middle can test patience.
What it asks of you: Set aside a little over two hours and settle in; it moves at an unhurried pace, with the emotional beats arriving gradually rather than in sharp bursts.

Premam2015
A Malayalam romance that shares Fidaa's gift for mixing comedy with real emotional stakes. It's charming without being saccharine, and the lead performances have the same kind of easy, lived-in warmth.
But If you're not tuned to Malayalam cinema's particular rhythm, it can feel meandering. Some plot turns strain credibility.

Jab We Met2007
An Hindi romance with similar DNA: two people from different backgrounds, genuine banter, and a script that trusts its characters to be funny without winking at the camera. Kareena and Shahid crackle together.
But It's been endlessly imitated, so if you've seen a lot of modern Hindi cinema, the structure may feel worn. Some parts date visibly.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha2015
A Hindi romance that, like Fidaa, finds its centre in two people learning to see past their own assumptions. It's funny, genuinely touching, and refuses to make anyone a villain for being human.
But The first twenty minutes lay on the comedy heavy. If that doesn't land for you, you may struggle with the tonal shift that follows.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Moulin Rouge!2001
Both films believe that romantic passion is worth the chaos it creates. Both are built on chemistry between actors, not plot mechanics.
Baz Luhrmann's mad, maximalist romance proves that passion doesn't need restraint. Like Fidaa, it finds genuine emotion in the collision between two people who think they know what they want. It's the inverse in every other way—extravagant where Fidaa is modest, musical, heightened—but it has the same faith in the power of two people refusing to give up on each other.
But It's loud, visually exhausting, and emotionally exhausting in turn. If you prefer subtlety and naturalism, it will exhaust rather than move you.

242016
A Tamil thriller with Suriya that has similar energy—propulsive, clever, and driven by character rather than melodrama. It's a complete change of mood but the same sense of intelligent entertainment.
But The science fiction premise requires patience to accept. If you need realism above all, it will frustrate you.

Ninnu Kori2017
A Telugu romance that landed the same year as Fidaa and has the same warmth and comedy. The performances are natural, the dialogue snaps, and it understands that love is funny.
But It relies on some fairly standard plot machinery. If you've seen a lot of romances, you'll anticipate where it's going.

Andhadhun2018
A Hindi thriller that proves Sai Pallavi's range and shows she can carry entirely different material with equal conviction. It's clever, darkly funny, and absolutely gripping throughout.
But It's a thriller, not a romance, and it's morally complex in ways that can be uncomfortable. It's not a comfort watch.

O Kadhal Kanmani2015
A Tamil romance about two people negotiating love on their own terms. It's light, funny, and has real chemistry between its leads—close in spirit to Fidaa even if the details differ.
But It meanders in places. The runtime is generous, and not every scene justifies its length.

Before Sunrise1995
Both films trust their leads and their chemistry above everything else. Both know that watching two people understand each other is the whole point.
Linklater's film is almost entirely two people talking—no plot, no outside interference, just two strangers in a city discovering each other through conversation. It's as unhurried as Fidaa is playful, but it has the same faith that watching two people connect is enough. No grand gestures, just attention.
But Nothing happens. If you need incident, conflict, or momentum, this will feel static. It requires patience with silence and conversation.

Your Name.2016
Both centre on two specific people recognizing each other as essential, and both refuse to let outside pressure—circumstance, family, logic—defeat that recognition.
A Japanese anime that scrambles genre entirely—part romance, part science fiction, part coming-of-age. It has Fidaa's emotional directness and its belief in destiny between two people, but it achieves it through impossible circumstances and visual invention. Stunning and utterly committed to its feeling.
But If you're resistant to anime, the visual style may be a barrier. The premise requires more suspension of disbelief than Fidaa asks of you.
