Double Dhamaal

A Bollywood heist-comedy about four hapless men plotting revenge against the con artist who fleeced them. It's silly, energetic, and built entirely on chemistry between its leads—the kind of film that doesn't overthink itself and doesn't need to. For anyone who loves ensemble comedies where the fun matters more than the plot.

TMDb rating2.4

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy loud ensemble caper comedies where the mischief matters more than the plot, and you laugh easily at broad physical gags and rapid-fire banter.

Skip it if the humour is loud, crude and repetitive, and at 140 minutes the gags wear thin well before the end; if you want subtle wit, look elsewhere.

What it asks of you: It runs a little over two hours at a relentless, high-volume pitch, so it helps to arrive in a mood for big performances and little restraint.

Dhamaal2007

The original that started it all. Same director, same spirit of controlled chaos, and the blueprint for how these characters work together. Essential context that's also just genuinely funny.

But It's seventeen years old now, and some of the comedy lands differently with age. The pacing can feel slack if you're used to faster cuts.

Khosla Ka Ghosla!2006

A heist-comedy with similar energy but sharper writing—a middle-class family outwits a property scammer. It balances character moments with genuine plot momentum, which is harder than it looks.

But It's more grounded than Double Dhamaal, so if you want pure silliness, this might feel a touch restrained.

Fukrey2013

Four underdog friends on a crime-adjacent adventure, with genuine warmth between them. Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma, and Manjot Singh have real chemistry, and the film trusts the ensemble over spectacle.

But The humour leans into crude jokes in places. If that's a dealbreaker, skip ahead.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Andaz Apna Apna1994

Both films treat plot as scaffolding for character comedy. The heist is just an excuse for people you like to be ridiculous together.

Aamir Khan and Salman Khan as competing con-men after the same rich heiress. It's the Platonic ideal of Bollywood ensemble comedy—weird, invented, utterly uninterested in whether anything makes sense, and funnier for it.

But The humour is completely dependent on context and Bollywood conventions. For someone unfamiliar with that register, it can feel chaotic and unfunny rather than charmingly mad.

Bol Bachchan2012

Abhishek Bachchan and Ajay Devgn in a con-man comedy that commits fully to its own absurdity. Well-crafted gags and a plot that actually moves, without sacrificing warmth.

But Longer than it needs to be, and the second half relies on broad slapstick if you've tired of that register by then.

Rang De Basanti2006

An ensemble of young actors where the chemistry feels genuine because the script lets them breathe. It's funny, it's angry, it's earnest—more tonal range than Double Dhamaal but the same faith in friendship.

But It pivots into serious territory in ways Double Dhamaal never attempts. If you want pure entertainment, this complicates that.

Go Goa Gone2013

Zombie comedy with Saif Ali Khan, Vir Das, and Kunal Kemmu. It's silly in exactly the way Double Dhamaal is silly, but with a genre hook that gives it unexpected freshness.

But The horror elements are played for laughs, not scares, which means if you want actual tension, there isn't any.

Pyaar Ke Side Effects2006

A gentler ensemble comedy about friendship and love. Smaller scale than Double Dhamaal but with the same warmth and chemistry between leads. Underrated in Bollywood's catalog.

But Quieter and slower. If you're here for chaos and crime plots, this will feel subdued.

It's Entertainment2014

Akshay Kumar in a heist comedy that leans into spectacle and fun. Big set pieces, genuine laughs, and the kind of film that knows exactly what it is and commits to it without apology.

But It's overlong and sometimes tries too hard. The spectacle can overwhelm the story logic.

Aankhen2002

A heist film with Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgn that's tense and clever. If you want to see what a proper con-man plot looks like with style, this is it—the template many comedies build on.

But It's a straight heist thriller, not a comedy. If you go in expecting laughs, you'll be disappointed.

Rififi1955

Both films are built on the pleasure of watching a plan unfold, showing us the intelligence and creativity of ordinary men attempting something impossible. One's a heist thriller, one's a comedy, but they're asking the same question: what makes us root for people who are breaking the law?

A French heist masterpiece in which a group of criminals plan an intricate jewel theft. Watch it to understand the structural skeleton that Bollywood heist-comedies hang gags on—the DNA goes back this far.

But It's in French, shot in 1955, and played completely straight. If you go in expecting anything like Double Dhamaal's tone, you'll be baffled and possibly bored.
