Brainman

A profile of Daniel Tammet, an autistic savant with extraordinary mathematical and linguistic abilities who can articulate how he does what he does—unlike most savants. The film follows him to America as neuroscientists probe whether his mind might unlock secrets about autism and human cognition. Warm, intellectually curious, for anyone fascinated by how minds work differently.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind2019

A young man in Malawi uses unconventional ingenuity to solve an impossible problem. Like Tammet, it celebrates how differently-wired minds generate solutions others miss, with genuine warmth and without condescension.

But The inspirational-true-story format can feel well-trodden. Some may find the emotional beats predictable.

My Beautiful Broken Brain2014

A neuroscientist suffers a stroke and has to relearn everything. Fascinatingly intimate about neuroplasticity and how the brain rewires itself—same curiosity as Brainman, from the inside.

But Intensely personal story about recovery that some may find slow. Not a triumphant narrative arc.

The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley2019

Explores a singular, brilliant mind convinced of something extraordinary. Like Brainman, it asks how we evaluate genius claims and what happens when brilliance meets delusion.

But Focused on fraud and deception, which is darker than Tammet's story. If you're seeking inspiration rather than skepticism, this reverses it.

Particle Fever2013

Both are genuinely curious about how understanding works—how the brain thinks, how science thinks. Both treat the subject with intellectual respect rather than mythologizing.

A documentary about physicists chasing the Higgs boson. Like Brainman, it's fascinated by how human minds work at the edge of understanding—but here the subject is particle physics, and the brilliance is collective, not individual.

But Dense subject matter. If you're not drawn to theoretical physics, the stakes may feel abstract and distant.

The Imitation Game2014

Alan Turing's mind as the subject: a genius whose neurodivergent patterns shaped how he thought. Mathematical brilliance married to social difficulty, portrayed with genuine complexity.

But Biographical drama, not documentary. Takes substantial liberties with fact. Some scenes feel engineered for emotion rather than truth.

Proof2005

A woman struggles with mental illness and mathematical genius running in her family. Interrogates whether brilliance and instability are intertwined, and what inheritance really means.

But Deliberately ambiguous and unsettling. If you want clarity or uplift, this resists both. Fairly bleak.

A Brief History of Time1991

Errol Morris's portrait of Stephen Hawking. Watches a brilliant mind communicate across its physical constraints with candour and humour. Pure intellectual affection.

But Dated production quality and pacing. Assumes some comfort with theoretical physics or patience with difficult concepts.

Temple Grandin2010

Milo Ventimiglia as the autistic animal scientist who revolutionized her field. Thoughtful biopic that treats neurodiversity as difference, not deficit. Warm without being saccharine.

But Television movie softness to it. Some autism advocates have critiques about how it portrays the condition.

Gifted2017

A child prodigy and her uncle navigate what it means to have an exceptional mind in an ordinary life. Asks real questions about pressure, choice, and what we owe to talent.

But Sentimentality creeps in. Family drama beats override the intellectual curiosity that made the premise interesting.

Handsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie2017

Both are about how minds process patterns and structure—except this one finds comedy in pattern-breaking. A tonal inverse: Tammet finds order in chaos; this finds chaos in order.

Absurdist comedy about a search for a missing cat that spirals into infinite tangents and paradox. Uses logic and pattern-finding as comedy. Completely unconventional and delightfully weird.

But Deliberately frustrating and plotless. If you need narrative coherence or payoff, this will drive you mad. Very silly.

The Eternal Memory2023

Brainman celebrates a mind working at its peak; this honours a mind in decline. Both are tender investigations of consciousness itself—what it is, how it works, what we lose when it changes.

An ageing poet with dementia and his partner navigate forgetting. Achingly beautiful meditation on memory, consciousness, and what remains when the mind fragments. Documentary poetry.

But Deliberately slow and lyrical. Grief-heavy. If you're seeking intellectual spark rather than emotional depth, it will feel oblique.
