Boys on the Side

A road movie about three women—a nightclub singer, a real estate agent living with AIDS, and a woman fleeing abuse—who drive cross-country and discover they need each other more than they expected. It's warm and funny without minimizing real pain, grounded in character rather than plot twists. For anyone who loves films where friendship becomes the whole story.

Thelma & Louise1991

The definitive female road movie: two women, open highway, and the freedom to become themselves. It has the same DNA of solidarity and independence, though it goes much darker and more mythic.

But The ending is bleak in a way that lingers. Some find the pacing slow in the middle stretch.

Steel Magnolias1989

Six women, a small Southern town, and a genuine understanding that female friendship outlasts everything else. Funny, tender, and unafraid to break your heart without apology.

But Heavy on sentimentality. The dramatic beats are telegraphed well in advance, so there are few surprises.

Fried Green Tomatoes1991

Two timelines, female friendship as radical act, and a woman discovering her own power late in life. Warm without being saccharine, with a genuine secret at its heart.

But The present-day framing story is weaker than the flashbacks. Some find the messaging about women's empowerment a bit on-the-nose.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Longtime Companion1989

Both center on characters living with or affected by AIDS as the ground-level reality of their lives, not as tragedy to overcome. Both refuse pity in favor of presence.

A chronicle of a friend group navigating the AIDS crisis from its quiet beginning through its devastating peak. It's urgent, angry, and tender—and it treats AIDS as a real thing that happens to real people, not a plot device.

But Harder to watch than Boys on the Side. It's not a feel-good film; it's a necessary one, and it refuses to soften its subject.

The First Wives Club1996

Three women of a certain age, scorned and angry, find their power and their friendship. It's lighter in tone but equally committed to the idea that women matter to each other more than men do.

But Very much of the 1990s, which some find dated. The humor trades heavily on celebrity cameos that may not land if you're not plugged into that moment.

Beaches1988

Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey as lifelong friends whose bond survives jealousy, distance, and terrible decisions. It's unsubtle and emotional, but it commits fully to the stakes of female friendship.

But Melodramatic to the point of parody. If you can't sit with earnestness, this will test you.

How Stella Got Her Groove Back1998

A woman in her forties reclaims her life and sexuality with her best friend's help. Lighter and funnier than Boys on the Side, but equally invested in female friendship as the real love story.

But The romance subplot feels like it won out over what made the friendship so compelling. Some scenes haven't aged well.

Withnail & I1987

Two unemployed actors on a disastrous road trip. It's male friendship instead of female, but the same DNA: two people who drive each other mad and can't imagine being anywhere else.

But British, bleak, and entirely dialogue-driven. If you need plot momentum or warmth, this will feel like watching paint dry.

Big Night1996

Two brothers, a failing restaurant, and the question of what you're willing to sacrifice for the person you love. It shares the intimate, character-focused tone and the refusal to sentimentalize its people.

But Very quiet. Things happen, but nothing explodes. If you're looking for external conflict or neat resolution, you'll be frustrated.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants2005

Four young women separated for the summer stay connected through a magical pair of jeans. It's lighter and more whimsical, but it understands that female friendship is the plot that matters.

But Aimed at a younger audience. The magical-object conceit can feel contrived, and the sentimentality is very earnest.

My Own Private Idaho1991

Like Boys on the Side, it finds the real story in how people on the margins create family and loyalty with each other. Both are road movies about people society has written off.

Two young men on the margins—a sex worker searching for his mother, a street kid with narcolepsy—find a fragile kind of family in each other. It's experimental, tender, and completely uninterested in conventional narrative.

But Aggressively strange. The plot meanders deliberately, the structure is unconventional, and it will alienate you if you need clear storytelling or traditional romance.

Paris, Texas1984

Both understand that journeys are about people, not places. Both trust long silences and let character emerge through how people are present with each other, not through exposition.

A man emerges from the desert broken and silent, and slowly tries to reconnect with the people he abandoned. Wim Wenders' masterpiece about shame, distance, and the possibility of repair. Visually ravishing and emotionally devastating.

But Slow and meditative to the point of opacity. Long scenes of characters not speaking. If you need clarity or forward momentum, you will find it unbearable.
